People’s Campaign & Premier: 7-Day Response

July 30, 2014

The Cabinet Office advised today that the Premier Michael Dunkley, had been contacted by the leadership of the People’s Campaign who reached out to him yesterday to “express concern about the heightened tensions in the community and misleading media reports in light of recent events.”

“During the exchange, the Campaign leadership signaled that the organizers are keen to have a reasonable and realistic discussion on the matter,” a Government spokesperson said.

The Premier said: “As promised I have commenced discussions with my colleagues regarding the letter received from the People’s Campaign last Friday [July 25]. A formal response will be issued and it is anticipated that a meeting to discuss the matter with the People’s Campaign principles will be held.”

BIU President Chris Furbert tells the crowd they expect a response in seven-days:

The People’s Campaign organizers added, “In light of the increased publicly demonstrated frustrations of some in our community, and the dangerous, inciteful, inflammatory, and irresponsible commentary being disseminated via various media outlets, the People’s Campaign wanted to first place on record that we reject the media manufactured ultimatum that has been the topic of so much attention.

“We do not negotiate in the press, and as such wanted to clarify our position. The People’s Campaign and the BTUC presented the government with a letter on July 25th expressing the concerns and frustrations of many Bermudians in respect to the handling of the PRC issue.

“We went on to state that we thought it reasonable to expect a ‘response’ from the government, not a ‘resolution’ within seven days. This we felt was a reasonable expectation.

“In light of the subsequent escalation of rhetoric and the increased tensions, the People’s Campaign took the initiative to reach out to the Premier with a view toward issuing a shared statement that would assure the people of Bermuda that their voices have been heard, and the government is prepared to engage in a discussion of all of the issues related to this matter.

“It is our hope that this first step in good faith will assure the people that there is a serious effort to resolve this matter for the good of the people and the Country.”

  1. mr.speaker says:

Didnt the man say dont come back to him in 7 days u wont get an answer. How F****** dumb r u people.

  2. Ringmaster says:

This creates a whole new meaning to the term “Combined Opposition”.

  3. I think it is very unfortunate that Mr. Michael Dunkley and the O.B.A do not take the people as serious as they should, we the people have the power not only to throw this party out, We also have the power to shut this damn Island down.

For far to long we have all been over looked by those who are hell bent on getting rid of the middle class, so there will be only the haves and have not, we have far to much foreign workers doing jobs we can do ourselves, we have far to many businesses in Bermuda exploiting our own people, as well as in the private sector.

We have been treated like second class citizens long enough, and this is not a black or whit thing, because there are far to many white and black Bermudians being taken advantage of, and exploited by our very own. We have a O.B.A Government who is damn clueless to the plight of main stream Bermuda but are very sensitive to the nature of the unfortunate position we face that they mostly and basically and strategically put in place.

When P.L.P got into power the then U.B.P and it’s kind went on a mass destruction platform to bring them and those that voted for them to their knees, P.L.P’s biggest issue is they fell into a great trap of becoming part of the problem to their own demise, that did not slow down the role of the U.B.P / O,B.A. and it’s kind to withdraw their wealth from the economy and place it else where, then the likes of so many businesses closing it’s door, and hoping they can hit us were it hurts the most, and when they the U.B.P./O.B.A got back in power, they will slowly with their loyalist put their funds back into circulation were it will benefit them and their loyalist most.

I stand strong on the fact that in order to succeed, you must be willing to sacrifice and in most cases suffer for the cause of making the future greater for others, so in short, let the People’s campaign go to the next level and shut this Island down in the height of our season and make the sacrifices we need to not give in until their is a resolve that all can walk away from and be comfortable.

we did it in the past and quite frankly it has been far to long, we need to take a stand and it should be across all racial lines, culture and creed.
Take our Island back and make these critters pay attention that enough is enough.

like cutting the grass and scrubbing the pots? there are plenty of those jobs that bermudains are capable of doing but refuse to.

      • Black Soil says:

Duane…you sound like Dr. Brown when he gave a speech at a sports club many years ago, and he inferred that Bermuda should burn down Front St. and start all over again. Sounds like you would rather rule in hell than live in heaven. Take a pill mate.

        • Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown says:

Would you care to present the evidence to support your ridiculous allegation?

          • Hmmm says:

So you did you or didn’t you say it? It may be ridiculous, but you neither confirmed nor denied.

            • Hmmm says:

As i thought, silence from Brown.

              • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

hang on a min mate…maybe he went to double check to make sure there WAS none hangin’ around…lol

          • Mr. Observer says:

            Thank you Dr. brown…….

    • Ringmaster says:

What a joke. 3 elections and now you complain? Maybe the PLP leaders were too into their own interests and used you? The PLP let others control them? After 14 years of PLP and now you want a different party, voted by the majority, to do what you wanted your PLP party to do? Tough. That is democracy, the will of the majority. The PLP had their opportunity and it seems they didn’t do what their supporters wanted. Now the PLP supporters want the party voted by the majority to do what the minority want? Well wait until the next election and see if you can vote in the PLP. Temper tantrums, marches and bully tactics won’t work.

    • Hmmm says:

PLP are STILL the PLP’s biggest problem.

I have no problem with a reform, but for those PRC’s in scope with the current law should not be punished any further. The reform can take place after that. These people are Bermuda too.

We are not second class citizens. That is in your head.

      • Gov't has no choice says:

The law is the law. Government must obey it and the law cannot be changed retroactively.

All they can do is change the law prospectively – that means that any applications received before any law change takes effect must be considered under the law as it stands today which means that any PRC that meets the existing criteria and has submitted their application must be granted status.

Only applications submitted after the effective date of the “new law” can be considered under that law.

    • Dan Moody says:

“Shut this island down in the height of our season”?

Hopefully, the dieharts (happy Cup Match Betty, Kangoo etc!) of both OBA and PLP disagree with this.

I was at Dockyard the other day and the atmosphere was fantastic. The staff (Bermudian and otherwise) were brilliant and I spoke to tourists who want to come back but stay in hotels.

      Happy Cup Match everyone.

    • Navin Johnson says:

      idiot….

    • moving forward says:

Duane Santucci it is the mentality of people like you who care nothing for Bermuda. The amount of dislikes you got for your commentary is indicative of the sentiment that you protestors “don’t” represent the majorty of Bermudians! Go away! We are not going backwards!!!

    • Yahoo says:

With 73 dislikes and counting, it appears as though the people think you are a joke.

FYI, the island already is shut down for Cup Match – enjoy everyone!

    • Nitty Gritty says:

In your own words, “shut this damn Island down”
That is exactly your problem, first disrespecting our Island home then threatening damage and destruction to our ability to survive.
This goes hand in hand with what the PLP did to this society for 14 years and you now unashamedly think you are the standard bearer for protecting and saving us?
Your party was removed in disgrace and is under serious investigation for all that it perpetrated. All Bermudians know this and have your number. 58,600 did not heed the call to march and carry racist signs.
looks like you are in a tiny minority of puppets being led by those removed from the public trough.
Judging by your english grammar and spelling, ‘far to much foreign workers’ (try ‘far too many foreign workers’) we will need to import more english teachers, unless it was your fault not paying attention in school.

    • Keeping it Real... 4Real! says:

you just don’t get it do you Duane..? and i’m sad to say you are not alone…you say the people have the power huh? well if you people have the power , then use it to CREATE!! not DESTROY!!. I’ts very easy to break a game that you can’t win at(the Game of Life) tsk tsk wake up, grow up and become intelligent… once you put Bermuda on its knees, IT WILL STAY THERE INDEFINITELY…go ahead do it…rise against the system…martial law would be implemented in a heartbeat…and that won’t go away either…this is why some of us are being labeled as stupid…in these times you cannot use methods from the 50′s or 60′s…you are not gonna beat Britain head on one on one, they might pacify you for a while, keep you calm because they not quite ready to drop the hammer on you yet…hmmmm things they don’t want you to know about.

    • Silence Do Good says:

This is exactly why the very vocal minortiy will not win on this one. PRC are far more welcome to our community than radicals who when things don’t go your way you want to shut the island down. What good will that do anyone. Keep it up and I would be happy for more expats to do your jobs.

  4. Archie says:

This is why we need more than one print outlet. This was reported in the print media. If it was wrong it is a very serious mistake that only serves to makes matters worse

  5. James Herald says:

    Boring. Next!

    P.S.

PLP lost the election, you aren’t in charge, and we don’t care what you think.

    • P.L.P/ U.B.P./O.B.A None of them are in charge, WE THE PEOPLE ARE AND IT IS ABOUT WE COME TO GRIPS WITH THAT FACT, AND HOLD THESE JACK RABBITS ACCOUNTABLE.

      • Toodle-oo says:

Amazing how very important ‘accountability’ has become since December 2012 .

      • jt says:

57% of we the people agree with PRC holders receiving status.

      • Navin Johnson says:

you are actually not in charge….saying it does not make it so….the biggest fear you have is that if PRC’s gain status they will not vote for you and you will not be in charge again…you failed miserably for 14 years so take a hike….Happy Cup Match

      • Raymond Ray says:

        Good morning
Below is an excerpt from a letter to the Editor of the other News paper, (July 30th. 2014) submitted by Mr. Glenn Fubler…(Do take the time out to read his letter.)
“ While August 1st. relates to a law which “granted” freedom from the shackles of slavery, Marley — the unofficial poet laureate of the human spirit — is reminding us of the power which we each possess; the freedom to choose how we respond to any situation. He notes that the power is within our minds.”

    • Hmmm says:

James, the OBA really care what people think. That is one huge difference between the PLP regime and the OBA. Your use of the PLP phrase does not apply to the OBA from my experience in speaking with some OBA folks.

  6. hmmm says:

“But I’ll say this to you. This is just phase one and I want you to pay attention because this is just phase one and phase two can be completely different to this phase here. Take that to the bank. Stay tuned for part two.”

Asked by one member of the crowd what he meant by a second phase, Mr Furbert said: “We’re waiting for a response from the Premier. After that response comes, that will dictate phase two. We expect a response within seven days.”

So what is Phase 2 ?

Do we have to wait for 7 days since the 29th July (Govt reply) or was it included in the original 7 days ?

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

‘Media manufactured ultimatum’… ‘We went on to state that we thought it reasonable to expect a ‘response’ from the government, not a ‘resolution’ within seven days. This we felt was a reasonable expectation.’… do they not remember what CF said on camera last week… and the PLP is trying to say they have always wanted to be reasonable about PRC’s status… when did reality turn on itself? And the PLP/PC/BIU are trying to say its everyone else distorting facts.

      • Hmmm says:

These groups talk of manipulation whilst playing us all for fools.

    • Come On Man says:

Im not sure he knows what the words ‘dictate’ or ‘phase’ mean.

  7. Watcher says:

It’s not the press’ making up unrealistic timelines you guys need to reign in Brother Chris who was too busy trying to make himself sound like a big deal after the march. I was 10 feet away and was clearly trying to make himself out to be a big deal and that he’d show government.

  8. Marge says:

Tweed, reminds me of Sharpton, and Jackson..How the hell do these so called ministers sleep at night? like the song says” God is wathing you”

    • Thank God, for the Tweed’s, Sharpton, Jackson, Martin Luther, Malcolm X,Bishop Goodwin C. Smith, Bishop Charles Foster Fubler, Barbara Ball, Dr. Eva Hodgson and the list goes on, but you get the point and I take note that you only mention black leaders so I thought I would do the same to stay with your small minded thinking.

      • By the way Dr. Barbara Ball was a white woman promoted to and by the black community as a champion for justice and equality for the black community. So we accept her as our own and proudly honor her

        • Hmmm says:

Religion has no place in politics. He needs to make up his mind between the two.

I think the PLP dragged him onto the island to try and ensure the church folks joined in with whatever they wanted.

Me thinks we are being played.

      • ABC says:

        @Duane P Santucci

        whats ur issue m8 ?

  9. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

hahahaha Phase 2!…Phase 2? i guess brother Chris don’t know about “The EndGame”…he da typa guy datl dive in without chekkin the depth..oh well he’ll cross dat breeg wen he gets ther i guess…lol

  10. Creamy says:

The Premier was given an ultimatum. Reconsider within seven days or face an escalation. Chris Furbert said if no change in seven days there would be “further demonstrations”.

It was not presented as a “reasonable expectation”, and we all know it.

It’s not really a surprise that five days later, the threat has to be withdrawn.

I wonder how the press views being thrown under the bus by the PLP People’s Campaign. It appeared to me they just reported what happened. It was only five days ago.

  11. Alvin Williams says:

Marge I wonder which god you are speaking off; the one that justified slavery; that blessed the colonial armies that enforce colonialism. or the one that lets the soldiers of the survivors of the Jewish holocaust massacre Palestinian children; women and old people? If that is your god than the rest of us will seek a god that is on the side of the rest of us.

    • Yahoo says:

Babble, babble, babble. Have some more Swizzle Alvin!!

    • NITTY GRITTY says:

Seek all you like but if you are the type that believes in such mythology from 2,000 years ago then surely you must accept that your god
gave you freewill, he/she/it does not control you like a puppet! That job is reserved for your political leaders.

  14. James Herald says:

I guess we all should be prepared for this ‘we’ll bring Bermuda down whatever the consequences’ BS from PLP.

Its like ‘we’ll be penniless and starving on this rock but we’ll be free of our shackles finally’. Like that will make ‘grass roots Bermudians happy.

Ignorance runs rampant in this island. The very people who were taken in by PLP and voted for them in 98 and beyond – are worse off than ever. And still PLP tries to blame the man.

Why did you not fix land grab and PRC stuff in your 14 years? Please answer this.

  15. Beautiful Bermudian Witch says:

a few hundred people do not speak for the entire population of Bermuda including people that have chosen to live elsewhere.

    • Evie says:

OBA paid bloggers you don’t stop history repeat OBA/UBP the more things stay the same the more things stay the same the Rag has never been honest in its reporting and has never apologize for it SMDH ridiculous

      • hmmmph says:

@Evie – the saying is the more things change the more they stay the same. When are people going to realise that there is no such party as OBA/UBP or UBP/OBA whichevery (sic) way people come up with.

      • Hmmm says:

Paid bloggers….where can I get in on that?

  16. Terry says:

    Happy Cup Match all.

  17. I and I says:

I just wish all those paid before to post negative comments would stop!Or are you still getting paid!

  18. aceboy says:

One minute fire and brimstone. The next trying to sound like innocent victims of the media.

    Go away.

  19. Linda says:

Wow,”have the power to shut this damn island down” that’s very strong statement, for one”damn island” it shows no respect for his country, and not a care for the working people that he call fellow Bermudians, some of us do work, and don’t want to be a part of this. You have no ideia of this negative feeding is doing to your beloved Bermuda.Happy Cup Match everyone.

  20. Left arm spinner says:

The people’s campaign, the PLP are both the same, trying to bring down the OBA.When the PLP were spending our money and our children’s money with NO ACCOUNTABILITY, the PLP supporters said nothing. Now they go marching every week for causes that the PLP created or did not address. The leaders are basking in luxury as the foot soldiers do the work,to get the leaders back in power. If that happens, well we saw what 14 yrs did to Bermuda.

  21. Mark says:

Is Duane the unoffical press officer for the People’s PLP offshoot now? Go up and place a bet at Somerset, lot more useful then your blind rabid speal on these postings.

  22. Takbir Karriem Sharrieff says:

The media hype about …an ultimatum…was fabricated to create friction! News reporters of any media should study and carefully review their words…..very carefully……Response and ….Ultimatum are two different English words with two different meanings and two different connotations…!

    • Creamy says:

Resond or there will be “further demonstrations” was the threat, in part.

    • Ultimatum? says:

“But I’ll say this to you. This is just phase one and I want you to pay attention because this is just phase one and phase two can be completely different to this phase here. Take that to the bank. Stay tuned for part two.”

Sounds like an ultimatum to me. As the saying goes: If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

    • Terry says:

Well you heard it with your own words Gary.
Oh that’s right you have been a Muslim for many years.

Chris Shurbert had to stand there and tell people to be quiet (video/audio) then tell them to hush up.

The man is a radical BIU/PLP.

Another Dr. Barbara Ball, Lois et al.

  23. Silence Do Good says:

I want to be a paid blogger. I will do it for the PLP, BIU, BTUC, PC, CURB, OBA, ABC or any other group. My opinion can swings with the wind and I can represent any point of view. FYI I do not come cheap.

  24. NITTY GRITTY says:

Without an influx of thousands of foreign guest workers bringing capital and generating more business for the local small business community, you are going to see one after another follow The Bermuda Sun. It is dumbfounding the sheer level of denial and ignorance flooding the Island.
The great truth is that nothing is ever as we were taught growing up, the world is upside down, those who cry racism sometimes carry the most offensive racist placards and 400 followers think they now determine the fate of us all! Here’s a wake up call to you dreamers, WE have the ability
to fix this Island’s economy, attract foreign capital and create jobs.
Just let us get on with it and that means you complainers and marchers and whiners need to step out of the way, you are not helping, you basically are clueless. Take a break and get to work. Let the capable do their job and that doesnt necessarily mean the politicians.
