The full statement from the Health Ministry is below:
Collaborative meetings are being held involving key government departments and emergency organizations involved in preparedness measures relevant to the current outbreak of Ebola in western Africa.
Included in these talks with the Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment and the Chief Medical Officer, are officials from the Bermuda Hospitals Board Emergency Department, Fire and Police services.
Also included in the meetings are the Departments of Airport Operations, Civil Aviation, shipping agents Meyer Agency and the Pilot Service, together with Customs and Immigration officials and others.
The collaborative group met on Friday in continuing discussions on the operational management of public health emergencies.
They planned for scenario, tabletop event exercises involving all stakeholders who would be enlisted in the management of such a public health emergency.
After Friday’s exhaustive meetings, the group resolved to advance the island’s preparedness for “all hazards” by addressing identified system weaknesses. Subsequent meetings will continue indefinitely to assure preparedness for a broad range of public health threats.
Regular updates on the Ebola situation will be posted on the government website www.health.gov.bm and the Facebook page.
A CITV presentation on “Health & Family” on Ebola Preparedness has been created for airing in the week ahead.
On August 8th the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of this virus to be a public health emergency of international concern. Bermuda and all jurisdictions are obliged to respond appropriately by educating the public about risk reduction and prepare to identify, contain and manage any suspected case of the disease.
The Ministry remains in close communication with their international and regional public health advisors and, as such, the Ministry can advise that it is following the latest advice from the World Health Organization.
There are no general bans on international travel and trade. However, the Ministry advises the public to avoid non-essential travel to locations where an outbreak of Ebola is occurring. The World Health Organization identifies the current outbreak as occurring in western Africa affecting four countries: Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
Ebola virus is not spread through the air, but through contact with blood and other body fluids such as urine, saliva, and semen of infected people. The risk from casual contact, such as shaking hands or sitting next to someone who is not displaying symptoms of illness is likely to be very low according to our regional health authority, Caribbean Public Health Agency.
Travelers are advised as always to stay informed of international travel advisories and alerts posted on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website (www.cdc.gov/travel).
If you must travel to any destinations at high risk for Ebola, please make sure to do the following:
- Practice careful hygiene. Avoid contact with blood and body fluids of ill persons.
- Do not handle items that may have come in contact with an infected person’s blood or body fluids.
- Avoid funeral or burial rituals that require handling the body of someone who has died from Ebola.
- Avoid contact with animals [such as primates, rodents, bats and livestock] or with raw meat. Avoid eating primates, bats and other “bush meat.”
If you become ill during or after travelling to a country where there are cases of Ebola Virus, you should delay further travel until cleared to travel by a doctor or public health authority. Seek medical care immediately if you develop fever, headache, achiness, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, rash, or red eyes up to 21 days after your return. Tell the doctor about your recent travel and your symptoms before you go to the office or emergency room. Advance notice will help the doctor care for you and protect other people who may be in the office.
Is it possible to find out passengers’ movements in advance – ie which flights have been booked already and where people have come from before they get to Bda? Dunno if this can be done but if so, it would give an idea of the likelihood of an infected person getting to the island?

If your in the same room with someone who you even think has Ebola GET OUT OF THE ROOM A.S.A.P. What they are not telling you,is that it can travel through the air via droplets. They have found it in the lungs of primates that were in seperate cages. An indication that it does travel through the air, IT IS AN AIR BORN VIRUS. They also came to the conclution the virus does not survive long in the air. Source Dr. Gary Kobinger, from the National Microbiology Laboratory at the Public Health Agency of Canada.

How is south africa going to encounter the risk of this virus as we are going to games in Africa(soccer). How we (south africans) going to manage the transmission of the virus as funs will be rubbing shoulders with each other in the stadium. Is the number of funs gonna be knwn as to ensures that all people went out they are tested in their way back home?
aids mutated into humans through the people who ate monkey brains in africa. the monkey brains contain hiv and aids, and the only way they crossed is by the people eating them over and over. The virus mutated and eventually adapted to humans. A new disease thrives like that, and that is why it spread so quickly. SAME thing with this Ebola strain in africa now. Was in bats, people ate the diseased bats for too long, and now thanks to that we have Ebola mutated for humans.
Relax everyone and rest assured – Doing the Personal Virus and Cancer Killer is the only way on Earth to avoid any catastrophic pandemics all round the world and by that to save the human race from extermination – The Ebola deadly disease can be wiped out within a few days, if everybody on Earth starts doing the Personal Virus and Cancer Killer for just a minute a day – then life on Earth will be restored to absolutely normal – all airlines will be serviced by regular flights, the mining and oil industries in Africa will not suffer any more losses and will be brought to their maximum capacity, people will communicate without any fears of any infections at all, they will shake hands, embrace each other, kiss each other, make love to each other and experience what true love is – absolutely free, for everybody will be absolutely untouchable for any infections, cancers, diabetes and strokes and will not give a damn what sort of viruses stalk out there – Ebola, West Nile, SARS, HIV, Colds, Flues, Malaria, Dengue, Yellow Fever, etc. I got the surefire weapon to eradicate the deadly Ebola virus right away, regardless of its replications and mutations and nobody will get sick or die from this abominable critter any more. The Personal Virus and Cancer Killer is just an exercise for a minute a day for prevention and for 3 minutes a day for max. 7 days for the sick person to get cured. Ebola and any other bioterrorist bugs are killed the moment they touch us. To disclose the incredible Personal Virus and Cancer Killer (the greatest discovery in more than 2 million years of humankind on the planet) to everybody, the world leaders gotta pay me 2.25 trillion bucks – the amount of money can be negotiated with each country in the world. Once I get the cash, everybody on Earth will know how to stay absolutely healthy all the time, all life long – never getting sick of any diseases even for a second.
The British are not helpful to Sierra Leonean . In time of problems, they don’t for care us and they leave us struggling for ourselves . The countries like China ,USA and others greatly help. We are greatly disappointed over the British colonization of sierra Leone . Look at the clear example of what they have done on the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone all of them have left and they cant even help .they respect their pound sterling’s but they want exploit us .
