Man Jailed For 4 Months After Disposing Of EMD

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Feb 3], a 36-year-old man was sent to jail for four months after he pleaded guilty to disposing of an Electronic Monitoring Device [EMD] which the Court had previously ordered him to wear.

Robert Green pleaded guilty to destroying the EMD, which was an ankle bracelet was said to be valued at $3,500.

Prosecutor Ms Nicole Smith told the Magistrate that the police arrested Mr Green on another matter and when they questioned him about the EMD, Mr Green told police “…it was ripped off …”

Just before sentencing him, Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said that the devices were very expensive and were an essential part of the Court process.

    Why didn’t the Magistrate order this individual,(and also others)to either pay cash or do community services until they’ve paid for whatever it had been they’d destroyed :-(

    $3500.00!! That is a fair chunk of change. How many are damaged that we don’t hear about?

    Perhaps the option should be given, if you want to stay out of prison on bail & wear the ankle bracelet, you put down $3500 deposit first. Trash the bracelet, lose the deposit.
