Minister Announces Draft City Of Hamilton Plan

June 24, 2015

The Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy announced that the Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 has been declared the “new, operative development plan” for the City of Hamilton.

The Minister said the plan identifies three sites as “Special Study Areas” for which additional public input and studies will be prepared – the Waterfront, Par-la-Ville car park and City Hall car park.

“The Draft City of Hamilton Plan will form the strategic development plan for the whole of the City of Hamilton but will not contain detailed policies for North East Hamilton,” a spokesperson said.

“The Department of Planning recognizes the distinct urban fabric of North East Hamilton and considers it worthy of its own local plan. The Department of Planning, in close consultation with the North East Hamilton community, is preparing a new local plan for this area.

“The Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 shall replace the City of Hamilton Plan 2001 except in the North East Hamilton area. As of Friday, June 26, 2015, new planning applications will be subject to the policies of the Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015.

“Planning applications for properties in North East Hamilton shall remain subject to the policies of the City of Hamilton Plan 2001 until the publication of the North East Hamilton local plan.

“The Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 is the product of a significant amount of public input which has been sought through questionnaires, visitor interview surveys, stakeholder meetings, community meetings and a City Plan travelling booth. The key findings and recommendations from this research are summarized in the Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 Report of Survey.

“This new City Plan encourages the growth of a sustainable, community orientated City environment through mixed use development, the adaptive reuse of vacant and under-used floorspace, city living, universal design, energy efficient design, green spaces, a high quality public realm and the protection of the City’s heritage and key landmarks.

“The Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 establishes objectives for different areas of the City. It identifies development opportunities and potential public realm improvements within three districts: the Historic and Retail District, the Contemporary Business District and the Residential and Community District.

“The Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 will be the subject of a three month public consultation period starting Friday, June 26, 2015. During this time, members of the public can object to, or comment on, any aspect of the Draft Plan. Comments and objections to the Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 must be made in writing to the Department of Planning no later than Friday, September 25, 2015.

“Public consultation forms and guidance notes are available from the Department of Planning and the Department’s website www.planning.gov.bm, under the City of Hamilton section of the homepage.

“Copies of the Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 are also available for viewing at the Corporation of Hamilton reception at City Hall, the General Post Office on Church Street and the Adult Library on Queen Street.”

“Technical officers are available to answer questions on the Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2015 at the Department of Planning during regular business hours and at the City Hall foyer from Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 3, 2015 between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Additional information can be obtained from the Department of Planning Forward Planning Section at planning2@gov.bm or tel. 294-9033.”

I’m hoping they include raising the city building height in this as well.

It would be nice to have the City of Hamilton organized in districts. A new revitalized entertainment district and residential district would be awesome. Plus a real shopping mall that stays open past 5:00pm with some of the world’s favorite brands and shops would be ideal as well.

Build in glass a 6 story “Mall of Bermuda” above city hall parking lot, first two floors to be used for covered parking. Who is walking today? it is not safe !

Friday night, make the City come alive with evening shopping till 10.00 pm as it has been dead for 60 years.

Didn’t get to read it all yet, but just the idea of 1. public consultation, and 2. a separate plan for North East Hamilton, just makes me smile and want to cheer. No wonder there aren’t any comments. For once, perhaps the nay-sayers can’t find something to complain about. I fervently hope so.

    • Not exactly says:

@Pastor Syl separate plan for NEH EEZ has been developed by the BEDC in conjunction with stakeholders over the years. I am also glad that the NEH plan was left autonomous.

  9. Jus' Askin' says:

Why did they bother having an election for mayor, if the government is calling the shots?

  10. Waterfront indeed…it should be a design focal point!I recommend changeable design with mooring weight for interchangeable man made docks and islands to be determined for each event…as done in Miami….the entire foreshore becoming an entertainment mecca….let us take our bliders off and get tuit!
