39-Year-Old Man Admits Stealing Fishing Rod

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Oct 6], 39-year-old Tio Weeks pleaded guilty to stealing a $149 fishing rod and reel from the Marketplace store on Church Street in July 2015.

The Crown Prosecutor told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that Weeks was caught on CCTV taking the rod and reel and leaving without paying. Shop staff unable to catch him but police arrested Mr Weeks later on.

The Crown Prosecutor said that to the investigating police, Mr Weeks had admitted the theft, telling police that he stole the rod and reel with the intention of selling them; and had sold them.

Asked to explain, Mr Weeks told the Magistrate that he was not working at the time and needed money, while the Crown Prosecutor told the Magistrate that this was not the first offence of this nature that had been committed by Mr Weeks.

After confirming that Mr Weeks was now employed, the Magistrate ordered that he pay $149 restitution through the Court and pay a $500 fine.
