Court: 53-Year-Old Fined $1,000 For Cannabis

March 31, 2016

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [March 31], a 53-year-old man was fined him $1,000 for possessing cannabis.

Warwick resident Craig Stapff objected vigorously after Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo accepted his guilty plea and fined him $1,000 for possessing 0.23 grams of cannabis in Pembroke on 26th October 2015.

Throwing his arms wide, stepping forward, and raising his voice, Mr Stapff asked: “What’s the justification for a thousand dollar fine for point two grams? There’s no justice in the system. Can you show me any mercy? ”

Mr Stapff told the Magistrate that he suffered from asthma and smoked cannabis because he found that cannabis gave him relief.

The Magistrate granted him until the 30th April to pay the fine or serve 100 days in default.

After collecting the necessary Court papers, Mr Stapff made a rapid exit from Plea Court.
