BBC News: MP Raises Alarm Over School Safety

An Opposition MP has criticised Government for failing to replace the fire alarm system at Elliot Primary School.

Shadow Education and Training Minister Lovitta Foggo, in a scathing written statement today, claims Government has known about the issue since an inspection six weeks ago. “That is more than sufficient time for that matter to have been dealt with,” she told us, adding “no one wants to have children in an unsafe environment”.

The St. David’s MP sees the problem as another example of Government’s misplaced priorities, citing public disquiet over plans to spend millions on a new airport while school upgrades remain outstanding.

Ms Foggo said: “I have not spoken to one parent that is not in agreement with the sentiment that they are quite upset that their children are in a school where, should a fire or the like beak out, there is a system there that is not working.

* The BBC reached out to Government for comment and anticipates a response in due course.

Update 5.14pm: The Government said, “The Ministry of Education is aware of the fire alarm deficiencies at Elliot School and is actively working with local vendors to resolve the problems. It is the intention of the Ministry to carry out the repairs by the beginning of next week.”

Note: Bernews is temporarily helping Bermuda Broadcasting Company by sharing its stories online. The station’s TV equipment is undergoing repair after being hit by lightning.

Granted, it should be rectified Ms Foggo but read this, “Update 5.14pm: The Government said, “The Ministry of Education is aware of the fire alarm deficiencies at Elliot School and is actively working with local vendors to resolve the problems. It is the intention of the Ministry to carry out the repairs by the beginning of next week.” (I hope that satisfies you / P.L.P?)
