BBC, Bernews Collaborate After Damaging Storm

March 31, 2016

Bernews will be sharing some of the Bermuda Broadcasting Company’s news reports online while their TV equipment undergoes urgent repairs, as local television news was knocked off the air by a lightning strike at the BBC’s Fort Hill headquarters earlier this week.

Radio stations, Ocean 89, Power 95 and Inspire 105, are back on the air as are the CBS and ABC television network feeds. However the damage has affected the company’s ability to broadcast local content.

“In the temporary absence of TV newscasts, the reporters are keen to sustain a broad audience for their stories and so we reached out to Bernews.com,” the BBC said.

“Bernews graciously agreed to partner with us temporarily and, starting today, will be carrying BBC news content on its website. The BBC will augment the partnership by promoting stories on its Facebook and Youtube pages.”

David Hills, the BBC’s Acting CEO, said: “The lightning storm on Tuesday damaged critical components in our TV Master Control. This has temporarily interrupted our TV news broadcasts and we are grateful to Bernews for helping us to disseminate our news stories online.

“Our reporters are keen to get their stories out to the public and although our radio and TV stations are back on the air, we are determined to find an additional platform from which to deliver our news.

“We are working diligently to fix the TV equipment problems and our overseas broadcast partners are flying in to resolve the issues. In the meantime, we thank our viewers and advertisers for their patience and understanding.”

Bernews said, “The Bermuda Broadcasting Company reached out to us at a difficult time for them and we are glad to help. We have always had a good working relationship with the BBC and Bernews.com is happy to share their stories through our online platform.”
