Premier Dunkley: “Regrettable & Disappointing”

March 1, 2016

“It is regrettable and disappointing that motorists were challenged because of the actions of this morning’s protest demonstration” and “most unfortunate that those heading to work and taking our children to school had their morning commute disrupted,” said Premier Michael Dunkley this evening.

The Premier’s comments follow after the protest this morning which saw people descend on the East Broadway area holding signs about the proposed immigration reform, and holding a protest that lasted to just past 9.00am, with some of the protesters standing in the road for a portion of the event, which caused traffic delays for commuters heading to town from the west end.

Short video of part of the protest this morning:

Premier Dunkley said, “It is regrettable and disappointing that motorists were challenged because of the actions of this morning’s protest demonstration. It’s also most unfortunate that those heading to work and taking our children to school had their morning commute disrupted, through no fault of their own.”

The Premier and Minister of National Security continued, “I called the Commissioner of Police to discuss the matter and he provided me with a full update.

“To be clear, this Government supports individuals expressing their democratic right to demonstrate and voice their views, but I would simply encourage members of the public to adhere to the appropriate laws, protocols and procedures as outlined by the Bermuda Police Service.”

  1. Bravo says:

Dunkley is always talking “to be clear, this government…” then says how they support free speech, human rights, public opinion and THEN says BUT….. don’t trust the milk man. He will milk you..man!!

    • sfsdfsd says:

They shouldn’t protest in the middle of the street, slowing traffic and disrupting people’s commute.

      • Hmmmm says:

Who people? A certain certain segment of people? Some commuters that were disrupted were honking in support…hmmmmm

        • joank says:

Probably honking them off the road

        • Strike fund says:

          And the vast majority didn’t.

        • Old Age Person says:

That was the Union people and those that don’t give a hoot for their job. I am sure you would be singing a different tune if one of your loved ones was injured and the emergency services could not get there in time because of this illegal disruption.

    • Onion Juice says:

What’s regrettable and disappointing is the way you run your Government, as I look at tv about International news and see how they disrupt during their protests (especially in Europe LMFAO), makes you wonder how they try to subdue our actions when its common worldwide.
      Mmmmmmmmmm

      • hmmm says:

Proof that Onion Juice is not Bermudian. (The way YOU run YOUR govt)

So you have to ask yourself what is in it for him/her ?

    • RBYC member says:

The truth is any year before a general election will be the worst year for a governing party. They will try to push all the unpopular policies for 2016, things will get worst. They know that 2017 is the election year. A time when the oba will have to kiss your Muahhhhhh :) :) for your vote.

They have upset many swing voters who voted for them. :(

      • Nanny Pat says:

Ummm, clarification: EVERY year will require the OBA to make unpopular dcisions and policies because of the huge, steaming mountain of chit they inherited. I don’t like that they have to do all of this stuff but I appreciate them taking one for the team (Team Bermuda) to get this ship sailing right again.

  2. One bunch of... says:

Dunkley “It’s also most unfortunate that those heading to work and taking our children to school had their morning commute disrupted” oh now he cares about jobs and the children. Ya right!!! Don’t use the children Dunkley. Tell them how you want to sell out their island

    • jaybird says:

Speaking of selling out, if the OBA were smart they would be selling instant citizenship to expats for a million bucks a pop. That would make a big dent in our public dent AND ensure them a big enough voting bloc to keep them in power for eternity.

    • it says:

“Tell them how you want to sell out their island…”

The last pack of dummies already mortgaged the place. How *can* he sell it, genius?

  3. nok says:

    Go lay down!

  4. OBA DONe says:

It is regrettable and unfortunate that the OBA wants to sell out Bermuda. That is what is regrettable Mr.Premier sir.

    • sfsdfsd says:

You just don’t know what your are talking about. Get educated, then make claims that you can back up with evidence.

    • hmmm says:

THE PLP SOLD BERMUDA….. WAKE UP.

The OBA are trying to keep us afloat.

The PLP are NOT in it for YOU…wake up already

  5. Family Man says:

So after your little update from the Commissioner of Police, can you let the rest of us know WHY THE POLICE ALLOWED THESE CLOWNS TO BLOCK TRAFFIC?

Is anyone going to be held responsible for the failure to ensure law and order?

    • The Original Truth™ says:

They allowed the PROTESTERS to carry on because they know who feels it knows it.

Cost of livin’ gets so high,
Rich and poor they start to cry:
      Now the weak must get strong;
They say, “Oh, what a tribulation!”
      Them belly full, but we hungry;
A hungry mob is a angry mob.
      A rain a-fall, but the dutty tough;
A pot a-yook, but d’ yood no ‘nough.

      - The Great Late Bob -

      • TheTravelingTreeFrog says:

“They” let them carry on as in the Police?

The Police Who didn’t take the same or even remotely similar paycuts/aka Furlough days ect that the rest of the civil service did when they were negotiating back in 2013.

Oh yea, they “know” how it feels… they have JOBS. Their bellys are not empty.

        Give me a break.

The issue with protesting in the middle of the road is that it is dangerous more so than disruptive. And dangerous to motorists and the protestors themselves. Had there been an accident how would an ambulence get through?

        • Get a clue says:

The police did take furlough days in 2013 like the rest of the civil service. And they have just started taking additional furlough days as of February 2016. You need to fact check. Lol

        • ray m says:

Police are actively making a sacrifice as we speak with furlough days ….dont speak unless you know what your talking about.

  6. Fart says:

The OBA are finished. They’ve totally swung the PLP back into power. Freeeeeeeooodoom!!!!

  7. Dunkaroo says:

The thing about dunk is…he tried to please everyone..fool everyone…and appease everyone. Ask the British how appeasement turned out for them

  8. It's our Island says:

And many if not most agree with this line of conversation and display of disrespect.

BERMUDA belongs to us all not just one group.

  9. It's our Island says:

Repeat. Most do not agree with this conversation and lack of respect.

Please do not keep us from our jobs again.

    Rudeness.

  10. Hmmmm says:

Some people love to say “most people” when they talk about issues like this. Shut ya mouth you don’t know what you’re talking about. Most people also supported slavery for umpteen years, apartheid, etc etc so shhh. No more sweets after 9 for you. You start to feel entitled

  11. Born Bermudian says:

    Only 30? LOL

  12. Smh says:

Dunkley, your government is regrettable and disappointing .

  13. Patricia says:

Really Premier Dunkley!! to you and the Commissioner. Its okay for police officers to DISRUPT traffic during morning rush hours to stop people for ticketing, etc when THAT can be done at another time but not for citizens to peacefully protest. Pls!! I had no problem with it. morning traffic is bad anyway this didn’t make a difference. Try doing something useful like fixing the morning and afternoon commute. Traffic is bad anyway. I am used to delays these days. no sense fussing.

  14. Coffee says:

Yet again the Premier serves up sour milk for breakfast !
    He must go !

  15. No one ….no one …should be on public road !

    Hindering rightful traverse…

    This is reckless endangerment…

And I am at a loss for words..

I leave early for work .. And because of these lot I was without my spare time to enjoy coffee and roll….next time this happens I will file a police complaint to all who stand in my way of laweful traverse…”and” those by act or omission…action or inaction did allow my freedom to be taken from me unlawfully!

  16. These “clowns” were standing in the road blocking traffic!

  17. Endangering by hindrance…lawful traverse and lawful gainful employment….these people not working does not give them rights to block those who have to!

  18. And the thing is.. Anyone with half a brain will understand…the only indigenous people are on the back of a penny!

    A razor back pig….

Everyone beyond initial settlers…and let us define their color and origin please! Should be deported!

  19. Eeeeeegrunt….
    Self serving…

    Converting others rights to domicile

    Counter productive …

    Me…me . me…people…

  20. Y-Gurl says:

Then Mr Dunkley…deal with the issue, and deal with your Police service who didn’t have a clue on how to handle a civil unrest issue not sure which is worse

  21. Several laws were yesterday…!

  22. Broken…

    With no response…

    Why not?!?

  23. Please keep these people off the thoroughfare …this is reckless endangerment “of” a moving vehicle!

  24. Everyone there are second and third generation immigrants themselves!

  25. Kathy says:

I like the lady’s sign “We are not anti-foreigner, we are pro Bermudian”. These people have a right to display their anger at the current proposal.

What I don’t understand is that the police permitted them to interrupt the traffic by moving lanes, etc? If they stood by Johnny Barnes, there would have been less interruption and everyone would have seen their message of free speech just the same!

If you are going to protest, do it a bit sensibly, please!

  26. Char says:

It’s funny how he needs the Police now yet he couldn’t even face them last summer. Hmmm!

  27. Jus' Askin' says:

And I thought Craig would go down in history as the Worst Premier Ever :-D

    Boy was I wrong ;-)

How You guys passed Paula, stomps me :-D

  28. Hurricane says:

The police service need to grow a pair and do their job.

  29. concern_bda says:

It’s quite unfortunate that Premier Dunkley is running from the real issue here. People are very disconcerted, and will not tolerate the continuing actions of the OBA government that continues to put its on own agenda forward and not the will of the people.

People are not opposed to reforming immigration. However we all need to take one step back, and both sides need to come to the table and put forth meaningful discussions on this issue.

If the government is unwilling to listed to its people that voted them in, the people will happily vote them out.

  30. Yo yo big nuts in da bag says:

i like how people here (obviously the idiots) are bashing Dunkley when he has never wronged anyone and the real morons here are the twits blocking the road for an assanine cause!

  31. Joke says:

    Ignorance at it’s best.

  32. seriously? says:

These people should be protesting the people who got Bermuda into this mess. Not the current Government who is trying to fix it. We are going to have to sacrifice if we are going to pull through this economic disaster and change with the times. Times have changed. If we are going to retain our status as a reinsurance hub (which brings in jobs and money and massive contributions to charity) we need to make changes. This is not about votes or colour. Come on, people.

  33. seriously? says:

And the police should have done their job and moved these people. Wish someone would grow a backbone on this Island and do the right thing.

  34. ALVIN WILLIAMS says:

The premier and his minister is playing the role of good cop bad cop if wha

  35. ALVIN WILLIAMS says:

The premier and his minister is playing the role of good cop bad cop and if you see unfolding before your eyes is regrettable-disappointing than that is on your government; your government’s anti-Bermudian policies have brought forth Bermuda’s season of protest.

  36. watching says:

what is regrettable is that many Bermudians placed their trust in the OBA government and are not getting fair government for all. They are not representing the interests of the Bermudian, and this is not a Michael Fahy issue simply, the entire cabinet holds responsibility for these failings, and thus at the next general election, all should be turfed out.

  37. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Ok folks…how many of you are ready for a revolution and are prepared to die for your cause because that is a real revolutionary…not a group of crying babies which can’t deal with life…when Haiti over threw their govt. did their situation get any better? ?

  38. I'm 25 and employed says:

I am a 25 year old Bermudian I have a strong mind and I am very opinionated . what I see and hear daily from our government leaders is rubbish there like a group of spoon fed rich kids . if I wasn’t strong when I was unable to walk for two years I would have falling into the judicial system like it seams thy want. I’ve been employed since June 2015 with no insurance niether does it feel like my employer is looking into my insurance I am working illegally in my own country I get fed up day to day night to night weekend to weekend with all the bickering I hear. But seams to me if your not strong minded and have a strong back bone from your parents regardless if they have left or can’t afford to provide for such child or children … You must keep a strong head they want to confuse the mind of strong young black man. Go work cut tress. Cut your neighbors grass. Help them with groceries they want u to feel as if the only option for a young black man is to take what he needs your being fooled hard work n dedication will get you further than robbing and stealing I am speaking from experience wake up before you all fall and never get up. Young black man in Bermuda s.wade

  39. I'm 25 and employed says:

  40. had enough says:

    Get rid of Mr Dunkley

  41. anydeeng says:

What is so difficult about having a public, moderated discussion/debate with people that hold alternative views to what gov thinks is best?

Why do people feel that rallies are the best way to convey a point to gov? There must obviously be a disconnect in peoples perception of their own ability to be heard.

Why do BOTH governments have absolutely no backbone and cant make a bold decision that helps bermuda AFTER they educate the public on the pros and cons of such a decision?

Why are there no alternatives presented to government proposals that are not favoured?
