Review Of Heroes Weekend “Five Star Friday”
[Written by Mikaela Ian Pearman]
Five Star Friday saw hundreds of Bermudians and visitors alike enjoying the official kickoff to Bermuda Heroes Weekend with top soca DJs, top artists and arguably the best soca band in the business.
The concert was held on the North Field of the National Sports Centre and offered entertainment for the young and the old. The show started at 7pm with gates opening at 6pm and eager fans filling the big white tent. The rest stood outside and danced in the rain.
Now let’s get on to the show. Local band DIA opened the show and DJs followed to get the crowd hyped before the artists took the stage. DJ Rusty G, DJ Stephen, Dr. Jay and Eman were the DJs for the night with a guest appearance by DJ Young Chow. Barrie Hype was the MC for the evening.
King Bubba got the party started before the main acts came to the stage and had the crowd in a frenzy with his song “Mashup”. Flags were flying and everyone was jumping up under and outside of the tent.
The first of the main artists to come to the stage was Ricardo Dru, who opened with hit “Vagabond”. He also performed “Professional”, “ID” and 2016 hit “Bet”.
Lyrikal followed with his new song “Freedom” and a few others including “Conquer Meh”, “Loner” and his mega hit from last year, “Cloud Nine”. At one point during “Cloud Nine”, he cut the music and the crowd sang the whole song a capella. It was such a beautiful moment for all the soca junkies.
There was a DJ set with a good bit of dancehall thrown in for a nice twist. But for me, the show really began when Kes the Band came to the stage. It was after 11pm when lead singer Kees’s signature voice poured out of the speakers and the crowd went wild.
.
The band opened up with their 2016 hit “People” and sang many more including “Thief a Wine”, “Look Fuh Dat”, “Fallin” and “Ah Ting”. They also performed a few soca covers and did a reggae set as well. This segment went a bit long and the crowd seemed to lose interest a bit but came back when the band performed “Wotless”.
Voice, the 2016 Soca Monarch champion, then came to the stage to perform his winning song “Cheers To Life” to much applause from the crowd. Teddyson John then performed “Allez” and both performers injected much needed energy to the room. Kes the Band finished the night off with “People” and introduced the amazing band to the audience.
Five Star Friday was the perfect way to kick off Bermuda Heroes Weekend. It was a night of clean fun and fantastic music. I’m heading out to get ready for Parade of Bands. See you there!
