Fire Being Treated As A “Suspicious Incident”

[Updated] Police and the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a fire this morning [Aug 19] in the doorway of The Athletic Club in Hamilton, saying “it appears that someone threw a flammable liquid at the door” and they “are treating this as a suspicious incident.”

A police spokesperson said, “Police and Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a fire that took place in the doorway of The Athletic Club in the City of Hamilton this morning [Friday] at 5am.

“It appears that someone threw a flammable liquid at the door which resulted in a small fire. The BFRS subsequently extinguished the fire which only damaged the carpet at the front entrance of the establishment.

“Police are treating this as a suspicious incident and we are appealing to anyone who may have seen this incident or may have any information that may assist in this investigation to please contact CID on 295-0011.”

Update 4.02pm: This follows after this previous incident this week, in which the police statement said, “At 3:12am on Wednesday Bermuda Police Service along with Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service attended a report of an attempted arson that took place at #5 Happy Valley Road in Pembroke.

“It appears that someone poured a flammable liquid outside of the door and when the occupant opened the door she noticed the area in flames. The fire was quickly however was quickly extinguished by BFRS and no one was injured and an investigation into this incident is now underway.

“Police are interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area to please contact the CID on 2950011.

    Hope everyone is safe. That is a basement gym and could’ve easily resulted in loss of life if that fire took hold!! I hope they find the culprit and throw the book at them!

    This is the second incident of this nature with the first being on Happy Valley on Tuesday where the person did the same thing. I hope there is not a serial arsonist out there as it is only a matter of time before someone gets injured. I am sure there is CCTV footage in the area please release the footage of the scum.

    Arson,murder,attempted murder ,firearm incidents and other such,public unacceptable Behaviours are indicative of the sign of the times, serious and…….disconcerting ,to say the least.Bermuda needs to get a grip,of our behaviours and trends. Isle of of Rest -or Isles of Unrest,the outside world is watching our behaviours.We can not afford a bad Public Image nor can we take a downturn in our economy as a result of it,Regardless as to who is in Power ,or the Government of the Day.Bermuda ,take note.Peace.
