Court: 44-Year-Old Jailed For Importing Cannabis

September 23, 2016

Appearing in Magistrates Court today, a 44-year-old man was sentenced to 3 years in prison after admitting importing over 5,000 grams of cannabis.

Damion Smith asked if he could change his earlier plea of not guilty, which Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe allowed.

Smith then plead guilty to importing over 5,000 grams of cannabis through the airport on 28th August. The street value of the cannabis was said to be $265,289.

After the K-9 unit alerted officials, a search of Smith’s two suitcases turned up 12 wrapped and heat-sealed packages of plant material. On analysis, the plant material was found to be cannabis.

The Crown Prosecutor told the Senior Magistrate that Smith had prior criminal convictions, and Smith admitted that he had a criminal record, and told the Senior Magistrate that he had been forced into doing hustles because he could not find steady work.

The Senior Magistrate handed down a sentence of three years.
