Mirrors To Host Clean Up Of Fort Cunningham
The Minister of Social Development and Sports Michael Weeks is inviting members of the public to join Mirrors’ 13th cohort for their spring clean-up day of Fort Cunningham and Paget Island on April 7th.
Minister Weeks said, “We believe that this is a great opportunity to simultaneously support the preservation of Bermuda’s heritage and culture and also learn about the incredible history of this historic site. It’s a great event for families to connect and also for young people to gain community service hours.”
The day will begin with breakfast, a brief opening, and stretching exercises at King’s Square, St. George’s, before the team heads to Paget Island at 8:40am. The day has been sponsored by XL Catlin which has allowed Mirrors to be able to supply lunch, juice, water, snacks, gloves and tools.
Participants are encouraged to bring whatever garden tools they might have, as supplies are limited. The goal is to have 120 people support Mirrors in this effort on April 7th.
The restoration project is a collaborative project between Mirrors, Outward Bound, Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, Department of Parks, the National Museum, Bermuda National Trust, Keep Bermuda Beautiful, Mirrors youth, volunteers and the broader public.
Kimberley Jackson, Mirrors Programme Manager said, “We have started discussions with the St. George’s Foundation and are looking forward to expanding the partnership for restoring the Fort.
“It makes sense to have all the key partners at the table to develop the long term restoration plan. We are delighted with the level of support to date which has allowed us to work on the overgrown vegetation and large trees that compromise the structure of the fort.”
