24th PechaKucha Night Set For Thursday

September 4, 2018

The public is invited to take in the 24th edition of PechaKucha Night on Thursday [Sept 6] on the patio of The Spanish Point Boat Club, with doors opening at 7.00pm and presentations beginning at 8.00pm.

A spokesperson said, “Every edition is different; PechaKucha Night 24 features short, dynamic and moving presentations on topics ranging from neurogastronomy to 3D printing, airborne plein air painting to building birdhouses, and healthcare to total life transformations.

“Our seven speakers include Sue Khan, Dr. Wendy Young, Christian Chin-Gurret, John Gardner, Laure Marshall, János Lengyel, and Jessica Meredith. Each presentation uses the trademarked “PechaKucha 20×20” format, in which 20 images will flash the screen for 20 seconds, ensuring that our presenters keep their talks short and to the point.

“PechaKucha Nights in Bermuda are always free of charge and open to the public, but donations are encouraged in order to give back to our generous hosts at the Spanish Point Boat Club, as well as to our A/V team. Doors open at 7.00pm so come early, get a healthy vegan dinner catered by Green Lite Cafe & Eatery, and grab your seats before there’s standing room only.”

“Sue Khan will tell her story of leaving behind what appeared to be a very “successful” career and venturing into new waters, in her presentation ’7 Years an Underwriter, 7 Months an Entrepreneur.’ Dr. Wendy Young will share her academic and professional experiences on the meaning of spirituality in community and the importance of the sacred in private life, using the power and depth of the ocean as a metaphor for nature and god.”

“They will be joined by Christian Chin-Gurret, a product design student, who will talk about his journey of building an innovative Bluebird box. After the intermission, János Lengyel will illuminate the PKN audience on the potential uses of 3D printing technology in Bermuda, particularly in ‘Made in Bermuda’ manufacturing.

“John Gardner will present a critical review of the issues revealed through the action of his ongoing sketchbook work ‘Painting on Planes’, 80 of which are currently displayed at the Bermuda Society of Arts Gallery.”

Mr. Gardner said, “The act of Painting on Planes addresses issues including the decision to conduct a retro approach to spending time on a flight which already provides free digital entertainment.”

“Laure Marshall, a specialist in hospital analytics and quality improvement, will share some insights into ‘Why is Healthcare in Bermuda So Expensive?’ in her twenty slides within six minutes and forty seconds. And in Jessica Meredith’s talk, she will explore neurogastronomy in ‘The science of senses – How does our brain affect our perception of food/drink?’

“PKN Events are held four times a year. Anyone interested in presenting at next PechaKucha Night is invited to contact the team at pechakuchabermuda@gmail.com or visit the Facebook page.

“Attendees are encouraged to spark conversations with neighbors during the intermission and after the show. Vegan and vegetarian dinners will be available for purchase, catered by Green Lite Cafe & Eatery. As always, we encourage patrons to bring their own reusable cups, straws, and eating implements to help reduce plastic waste.”
