Award Ceremony To Honour Bermuda’s Athletes

The names of the Sport Bermuda Magazine Awards’ recipients have been released ahead of the hosting of a gala ceremony at Ruth Seaton James Auditorium on November 24th, with the event aimed at paying homage to Bermuda’s sporting heroes.

All of the current Olympic Sports listed under the Bermuda Olympic Association [BOA] banner are observed – 28 sports – plus two more, bringing the total number to 30 sports, with 68 prizewinners.

In addition there are four major awards, with the honourees previously announced and headlined by the The Lifetime Achievement Award, which has St. George’s Cup Match legend and winning captain Calvin “Bummy” Symonds as its recipient.

“We simply wish to award those that have made impactful and valuable contributions to Bermuda via sport and sporting talent and commitment to raising the standard of their particular discipline or disciplines in many cases,” said Mark “Burger” Jennings, the creator and author of Sport Bermuda Magazine.

“There are so many individuals that have benefited and in turn returned the blessing to the game of their favour and even beyond, and we simply want to mark he many contributors to this wonderful thing called sport.”

Meanwhile, additional to the Lifetime Achievement there is The Dudley Eve Sports Administration Award – Donald Dane [recipient]; The W.F ‘Chummy” Hayward Award – Charles Marshall [recipient]; The Humanitarian Award – Jim Butterfield [recipient].

“The event is the brainchild of Mr. Jennings is to stand also as a preamble to the re-launch of the Sport Bermuda Magazine in January of next year [2019] following a period of hiatus as Mr. Jennings pursued overseas roles at major worldwide sports network ESPN in radio, as well as later becoming a Director at Arsenal Football Club [Academy] in Augusta, Georgia,” the organisers said.

“Choosing the honourees was a panel of sports connected individuals,” the organisers said.

“The awards show is set to start at 6.30 pm and be co-hosted by local funny-man Earlwin [Bootsie] Wolffe and legendary sportscaster Joe L.Brown, along with a cast of presenters, and feature prime musical acts including former Bermuda Idol winner and singer/songstress Olivia Hamilton as well as The Brothers, formerly known as The Euphonics, featuring Kenneth ‘Pop’ Simmons at lead vocals during the course of the night’s proceedings.”
