July 22, 2011

[Updated with videos] Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief today [July 22] welcomed the tabling of the Report of the Joint Select Committee on the Causes of Violence and Gun Crime in Bermuda.

Joint Select Committee Report Bermuda July 22 2011-1-2

Dozens of people appeared before the committee including Digicel CEO and Rise Above co-founder Wayne Caines, a group of CedarBridge Academy guidance counselors, community activist Scott Smith, former Senator Gina Spence, gay rights activist Mark “Sybil” Anderson, former Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith, Collector of Customs Winifred Fostine-DeSilva, former Police officer and UN Peacekeeper Jeff Baron.

“I look forward to studying the work and recommendations of the Report and I thank the Committee for their detailed work over many meetings,” said Minister Perinchief.

“I am particularly appreciative of the wide ranging remit exercised by the Committee. Recommendations cover the spectrum of the Police Service, Corrections and Education. This is important because addressing the causes of violence and gun crime in Bermuda demands an examination at all levels.”

“Hard on the heels of significant successes in interdiction and firearms arrests, the Bermuda Police Service will no doubt also be keen to consider the Report. The men and women of the Service deserve our continued support and the Committee’s Chairman recognized that in the House today.”

Chairman of the Committee Randy Horton tabled the Report in the House today and advised Members that the implementation of the bipartisan recommendations were, in some cases, already in train by the Government. Mr. Horton also tabled a Motion which will see the House debate the Report.
