Food Review: Restaurant Weeks At The Loren
[Written by Mikaela Ian Pearman]
My second stop for Restaurant Weeks was The Loren, a place I love to go for breakfast or lunch. The last time I was here for dinner was during Restaurant Weeks last year so I was very interested to see how it would compare.
The Restaurant Weeks menu [PDF] was made up of items on the existing menu so that diners could try options for a lower price point than normal. I’m not the biggest fan of this concept, but I get why restaurants do it.
That said, I was really looking forward to the dinner because there were quite a few things that looked delicious to me.
For my starter, I chose the Kale and NY state apple salad. It had cranberries, butternut squash, candied pecans and a delicious, light vinaigrette. It was a great start to the meal with wonderful textures.
Side note: I’m trying to stay as healthy as possible during Restaurant Weeks so that I don’t gain weight, hence the salad. Thankfully, it was a well thought out, tasty salad that I would order again and again.
For the main, I opted for the Bermuda Onion Risotto with leeks, pumpkin, and a mushroom Cabernet demi glaze. I usually go for the fish option, but it was the same as last year so I opted for something different.
The risotto was served in the middle of the plate and the pumpkin and mushrooms were around it. I wasn’t crazy about the presentation because I prefer my risotto all mixed together, but it was rich, creamy and super comforting. The mushrooms and pumpkin were my favorite part of the dish. The risotto could have used a touch more seasoning, but I enjoyed it.
For dessert, I ordered the chocolate fondant cake, which I’ve had before. It came with a side of rum ice cream that was incredible. The cake was decadent and chocolatey, a great end to the meal.
Overall, I enjoyed my meal at The Loren. The service was wonderful and I was able to have a quick chat with Chef Tim Sullivan. He told me the focus remains on seasonal food, which has been the hotel’s thing since they opened. He also said there are a couple great events coming up, which I’m looking forward to.
Next up: Sul Verde at Rosewood Bermuda.
