“Rolling For WindReach” Event Continues

July 28, 2020

The “Rolling For WindReach” virtual challenge is still ongoing until July 31st, and people can still participate by donating directly or taking part in the virtual challenge by completing any distance and activity that suits their ability level.

A spokesperson said, “Individuals across the globe have been joining Jessica Lewis in the “Rolling For WindReach” virtual challenge. This virtual event started July 18th and runs through July 31st, 2020, and was the brainchild of Bermuda’s two-time Paralympian.

“Jessica was compelled to help raise funds for WindReach; the organisation that she credits for getting her started in her athletic career and has completed the 13.1 miles [half marathon] in just over an hour on, July 18th, 2020. Since which, she has done an additional 13.1 miles to help encourage and challenge others to get moving in support of WindReach.

Ms Lewis stated, ”WindReach Bermuda holds an extremely special place in my heart. Without its programmes and incredible staff throughout the years, I wouldn’t be the athlete, let alone person, I am today.

“The “Rolling for WindReach” challenge started from a simple idea I had as I wanted to do something to give back to this amazing organisation. But through working with the wonderful staff currently at WindReach, it blossomed into something so much bigger that I am extremely proud to be a part of.”

Flora Duffy, World Triathlon Series World Champion, joined Ms Lewis on day one and completed the 13.1 miles from South Africa, and there were others that supported the event from Canada and Australia.

She continued, “I send out a great big thank you to the many people who have donated, completed or have almost completed the 13.1 miles. You have all really brought it to life and shows just how much you care about, ‘Celebrating all Abilities’.

“There is currently a total of 33 people that have either completed or are in the midst of accomplishing the 13.1 mile challenge. Individuals are able to complete the challenge at any location and choose their favourite activity,” a WindReach spokesperson commented.

“Many of the challenge participants have chosen to walk or run the required 13.1 miles. However, we have had a few cycle and one person rowed. We are very grateful for the community’s support of this event and through their generosity, have raised over $11,000!

“We are hopeful that we will reach the target goal of $20,000 which will help support our therapeutic and educational programmes. The programmes at WindReach have been temporarily suspended due to the impact of Covid-19. However, with the island now in phase four, we are looking to slowly open programmes next month.

”It is not too late to sign up at RaceDayWorld.com, by using the search ‘Rolling for WindReach’. Individuals can donate directly via the DONATE button or register for the challenge and become a participant and complete any distance and activity that suits their ability level. The Rolling for WindReach challenge is open until July 31st, 2020.”
