Fundraising Page For Canon Norman Lynas
The Vestry of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity is inviting the public to donate to help Canon Norman Lynas, who was involved in an accident which has left him paralyzed from the neck down.
A spokesperson said, “The community is aware of Canon Norman Lynas’s tragic accident on July 30th, which has left him paralyzed from the neck down and still on ventilator support.
“To aid in the extensive long term costs of Canon Norman’s healthcare and living needs, the Vestry of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity has established an international GoFundMe account and is inviting all who have been touched by Canon Norman’s work, life and friendship, to contribute to this fund.
“You can go here to get more information and contribute. Any donation is greatly appreciated, and all funds will be used directly for Fr. Norman’s care.
“Canon Norman has contributed greatly to the people of Bermuda as well as his homeland of Ireland where he served first in Northern Ireland, then as Dean of St. Cannice’s Cathedral for 18 years in Kilkenny Ireland. Canon Norman has also been guest pastor and preacher for the United States Epsicopal Church communities in Cold Spring, New York, Newton, NJ and Hackettstown, NJ.
“In Bermuda specifically, Norman worked closely with Bishop Nicholas Dill serving the Cathedral family as priest and pastor. He also conducted numerous marriage ceremonies, baptisms of new babies, confirmation services, and from small quiet intimate funerals to large services for Bermuda’s officials. You might also have seen the Canon covering pastoral needs throughout the Anglican Diocese and as guest preacher at St. Theresa’s Cathedral upon the invitation of Bermuda’s Roman Catholic Bishop WiesÅ‚aw Åšpiewak.
“In addition to serving as Chaplain at King Edward Hospital, the Bermuda Sailors Home and Assistant Chaplain to the Bermuda Police Services, Canon Norman also conducted annual services for the Bermuda airport Custom’s team, Bermuda Girl Guides and for Saltus School graduations.
“Passionate about his work for God’s people in many capacities, you may have also seen and shared time with the Canon when he served as rugby referee at National Stadium or helping with the Cathedral lunch program, and most recently, participating with his wife Mary-Claire in the Black Lives Matter walk. Canon was also a member of the English Speaking Union Bermuda Book club.
“Norman is known for his erudite preaching, his knowledge of history and his engagement with every aspect of church life within the Anglican Church and broader community of faith. He is much beloved for his tender pastoral care to all who have need. His Irish brogue and rich sense of humour made him a memorable figure in the streets of Hamilton and around the Island, often in the company of his wife, Mary-Claire and their little dog, Katie.
“Canon Norman has endured several complications and multiple surgical procedures since his accident. He is still in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Lahey Hospital in Boston with his wife Mary-Claire by his side. Aly was able to support her mom and Norman for several weeks by being in Boston, but Norman’s sons Tristan, who currently lives in Kilkenny, Ireland and Adam, who currently lives in Pont a Mousson, France, have been unable to see their Dad because of Covid travel restrictions.
