Philips Trains At Wimbledon With Stephen Alger

October 15, 2020

Daniel Philips has had the opportunity to hit balls at the famous All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club or better known as Wimbledon.

Phillips said, “I had the opportunity to go to the All England Club and visit Wimbledon for the first time. For me, it was like walking into a very special and historic place. I was very excited to look around and see the grass courts where all the professionals play.

“It was an honor to meet and play at Wimbledon with Bermuda’s greatest player in history – Stephen Alger”.

Alger competed for Bermuda at the 1988 Summer Olympics, and is the only tennis player representing Bermuda at an Olympic Games.

“Alger met us at the main entrance and then walked us to one of the inside courts, where we played on clay. The court felt amazing and was really nice to play on,” continued Phillips.

“Alger was a wonderful guy to meet, he was full of energy and he shared some very interesting tactical tips, he was an extremely kind man. I really enjoyed playing with him. We warmed up and played some points. He then walked us around the club and took us inside the clubhouse.”

Phillips reflected, “When you walk in the main entrance there is a sign above the door where the players walk onto center court. It reads: ‘If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two impostors just the same.’

“Alger told me it is a quote by Rudyard Kipling. In the entrance, I also got to see the championship trophies which are on display. We then went to take a look at the center court, the center court felt amazing. I hope to play there one day.”

Phillips concluded, “We then went to the clubhouse and sat off and talked about my journey and what I am hoping to do in the future.”
