Covid-19: 471 Results Received, One Positive

November 18, 2020

There were 471 test results received and one was positive for Covid-19 — which “is classified as local transmission with a known contact” – so the island now has 19 active cases.

A Government spokesperson said, “There were 471 test results received by the Ministry of Health yesterday [17 November 2020], and one was positive for COVID-19.

“This most recent case is classified as local transmission with a known contact with details as follows:

  • 1 resident who became symptomatic having been under quarantine since 12 November 2020, as they were a household contact of an imported case. [The imported case is a resident, who arrived on 7 November 2020 and tested positive on their Day 4 test].

“Bermuda now has 224 total confirmed positive cases. Their status is as follows:

  • There are 19 active cases, who are:
  • all under public health monitoring, and
  • none are hospitalized or in critical care;
  • a total of 196 have recovered, and
  • the total deceased remains 9.

“The average age of all of our confirmed positive cases is 53 and the age range of all of our positive cases is from 7 to 101 years.

“The average age of all deceased cases is 74 and the age range is 57 to 91 years.

“The source of all local cases is as follows:

  • 111 are Imported
  • 92 are Local transmission, with known contact
  • 21 are Local transmission with an unknown contact, and
  • none are under investigation

“Bermuda’s country status is ‘Sporadic Cases.’ The seven-day average of our real time reproduction number is less than 1.”

  1. Cotton Wool Brigade says:

Ok, so another positive result care of a returning resident with a positive result in the same household. Hardly cause to panic.

On another note, and although nothing to do with this result, but to do with COVID, I was treating myself to a specialty coffee from a well known cafe this morning. Being environmentally conscious, and knowing the reusable cup is rewarded with a small discount, I handed over my cup mid-order. The barista was quick to advise that the Health Department has told them they are no longer allowed to accept reusable cups because of COVID.

Now, as stated above, the country’s status is listed as “sporadic cases”, and all new cases since July have come through the airport (and occasionally passed on to a close contact). We are not catching COVID off of reusable coffee cups! Moreover, I don’t know who has been in contact with the disposable cups…a lot more hands have the potential to touch the disposal cup than they do my reusable cup!

Finally, does the department for the environment have an opinion on this forced use of single use plastic and paper, neither of which can be recycled in Bermuda? The damage being done to the natural world around us will be far greater than this virus, and will take many years longer to recover from. It’s such a shame so few people seem to understand this.
