Firefighters Extricate Two People After Collision
[Updated] Emergency services responded to a collision in Smiths last night [March 29], with firefighters extricating the passenger and the driver from the car, with both persons then transported to KEMH via ambulance.
A BFRS spokesperson said, “At 11:26pm on Monday March 29, 2021, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service dispatch center received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision at Knapton Hill and Idle Acres Road Smiths parish.
“BFRS responded with two appliances, one from Hamilton Station and one from Clearwater Station along with the ambulance from Clearwater and one from KEMH. There were a total of eight firefighters at the incident.
“On arrival, fire crews saw one vehicle vs a wall which was involved in the collision with two males needing extrication. Fire crews quickly extricated both passenger and driver who were then transported to KEMH via ambulance for further medical treatment.
“The cause of the road traffic collision is under investigation by the police.”
Update 12.17pm: A police spokesperson said, “Shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Monday 29th March, 2021, police responded to a report of a single vehicle collision involving a motorcar, near the junction of Knapton Hill and Idle Acres Road, Smith’s Parish.
“Upon arrival, officers discovered two of the four occupants, both males, aged 16 and 17, were injured in the collision.
“The 16-year-old, who was unresponsive, remained trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by personnel from Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service.
“Both injured parties were transported via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment to their injuries.
“At last check, the 16-year-old remained unresponsive and is warded in the hospital’s intensive care unit. The seventeen-year-old was attended to for a leg injury and discharged.
“The driver of the vehicle, which was extensively damaged, was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst impaired, but subsequently passed the breath test.
“Forensics and Traffic Investigation officers attended and processed the scene as part of the ongoing investigation into this collision.
“Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the main police number, 295-0011.”
