Sinclair Packwood Race Not Listed On Schedule
The Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race [SPMR] — the cycling event usually held on Bermuda Day — may not take place this year, with Bermuda Bicycle Association currently not listing it on their schedule and explaining that “if the community gets to the point where Government permits larger events” then the BBA “will revisit this important race.”
According to their tentative plan schedule, the Sinclair Packwood Memorial race does not appear on the list, with an individual time trial scheduled for the day after Bermuda Day.
Peter Dunne, the President of the Bermuda Bicycle Association, said, “We currently do not have it in our tentative calendar. You will have noted that in May we are looking at just time trials which are easier to run in Covid conditions than a mass start race such as the SPMR.
“For us to be able to have this event we would need events to permit up to 50 people and remain compliant. If the community gets to the point where Government permits larger events then I am sure we will revisit this important race.
“What makes the SPMR special is the huge number of spectators along the route and in Hamilton. It appears that an event attracting such numbers is beyond the expectations of the Government at this time. I know that the Half Marathon Derby organizers are holding off until May 1st to determine if they will open their event to registrations, and the BBA could use a similar timeline.
“This assumes that the Corporation of Hamilton, Corporation of St. George, and necessary public resources are willing and available. Fingers crossed that the health of the community improves rapidly so that this and other important events in the calendar can resume.”
