Olympic Association Pays Tribute To Mike Sharpe
The Bermuda Olympic Association has paid tribute to Olympian Mike Sharpe, noting he was a world-class sprinter and horizontal jumper, and said his “legacy as an Olympian is a part of our proud history and his support of the Bermuda sporting community has extended far beyond his years as a competitor.”
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Olympic Association was saddened to learn that Olympian Mike Sharpe passed away this weekend. A member of the 1976 Bermuda squad at the Montreal Games, Mike competed in the 100 meters race and the 4 X 100m relay alongside Dennis Trott, Calvin Dill, and Gregory Simons.
“He was well-known locally for his enthusiastic reporting of local sports. A fixture of the Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby live coverage, Mike’s commentary for the annual running event was always lively and engaging, revealing his passion for running events.
“As an unwavering supporter of all sports in Bermuda, he was an engaging interviewer who was always interested in the depth of the story.”
BOA President Peter Dunne said, “On behalf of the Bermuda Olympic Association, our members, and all Bermuda Olympians, we extend our sympathies to the family and friends of Mike Sharpe.
“His legacy as an Olympian is a part of our proud history and his support of the Bermuda sporting community has extended far beyond his years as a competitor. For this we will always be grateful and hold him close in our memory”.
Branwen Smith-King, BOA Secretary General added, “It saddens me to hear of Mike’s passing. He was one of Bermuda’s most talented athletes as a world-class sprinter and horizontal jumper. Mike’s warm personality and vibrant smile will be greatly missed. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Mike was one of a kind and love by so many people from all walks of life.”
Mr Sharpe passed away this weekend in Florida at the age of 65.
