Photos & Video: Personal Empowerment Initiative
An event was held at City Hall yesterday [Feb 21] to highlight efforts being made to increase the opportunity for further learning and education at Westgate Correctional Facility.
The project is being spearheaded by eight volunteers, including Tulani Bulford, Glenn Fubler, Kim Jackson, Malcolm Kirkland, Norbert Simmons, Sharon Swan, Lynne Winfield, and Cummings Zuill, who are working in collaboration with the Minister of National Security, the Commissioner of Prisons, the Mirrors Programme, and Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda [CURB].
Glenn Fubler said, “An on-going project benefiting from shared legacy, which is offering encouraging insights, is the Personal Empowerment Circle at Westgate. This collaboration involves eight volunteers who have brought their diverse experience to the table; including Tulani Bulford, myself, Kim Jackson, Malcolm Kirkland, Norbert Simmons, Sharon Swan, Lynne Winfield and Cummings Zuill.
“The group’s intention is to inspire those incarcerated to leverage their capacity for transformation. We are aware this requires engaged participants, as well as the assistance of the village to sustain those sparks of progress. It is evident that sharing stories of transformational figures such as Malcolm, Mandela or Martin; or our own Wilfred Allen – also known as Mose – is one inspirational means.
“Wilfred Allen was an exemplar of transformation; having been incarcerated in his youth but emerging with a passion for life-long-learning, to be an iconic contributor to the social progress of Bermuda.
“This initiative serves as a first step, providing for books and material – in honour of Mose – thus enhancing the learning environment, to nurture personal transformation at Westgate’s Library.
“The call to action for the village includes any of the following options:
- “Purchase a gift certificate from one of four outlets: Bermuda Book Store – 295-3698; Brown & Co. [Martin] 279-5443 ; Griot – 261-2665; Long Story Short – 705-1838.
- “Donate an out-of-print book about Bermuda history [books can be dropped off at the Mirrors Office at 43 Church Street Global House, first Floor]
- “The selection of the specific books will come through the collaboration of the Correction’s education staff and the volunteers [please make your recommendation via reply email]“
Fix the education system so that people don’t have to turn to crime. Make sure people have the tools to be successful in the work force or market place.
LOL Education has and will always be key to this issue. Any Governing body that gets in the way of education our youth including unions need to be repurposed and cleansed of outdated bad practices.
