BUEI Talks To Hold ‘Island SOS’ On June 25

June 19, 2022

The fifth instalment of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s [BUEI] eight-part Island SOS [Sustainable Ocean Strategies] series is slated to take place at BUEI on Saturday, June 25th at 4.00pm.

A spokesperson said, “This month’s island nation being highlighted is the Isle of Man, with a presentation by Bill Dale, founder of ‘Beach Buddies’. During his presentation, Bill will share methods used by ‘Beach Buddies’ to obtain and retain UNESCO biosphere region status.

“Since its inception in 2006, the charity Beach Buddies has been clearing plastic waste off the beaches of the Isle of Man coastline. Now, with over 15,000 volunteers helping the island to tackle plastic pollution, the charity has become internationally renowned for setting global standards of beach cleaning, and in October 2016, the Isle of Man was granted UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.

“Biosphere reserves are learning areas for sustainable development under diverse ecological, social and economic contexts. They operate by bringing people and the environment together to build sustainable communities to preserve environments that provide habitats for nature, marine and birdlife.

“Beach Buddies seeks to encourage new UNESCO Biosphere Reserves by offering easy but structured guidance points to encourage groups, families, schools and individuals to get together and protect their island to make a positive environmental impact. Bill has become a frequent guest speaker highlighting the work of his organisation around the world and will share these methods during his BUEI Talks Presentation.

“Approximately 11 times larger than Bermuda, the Isle of Man has 55.3% more coastline than Bermuda. Despite the vast difference in size, the population of the Isle of Man is only 26% greater than Bermuda’s.”

“Isle of Man is a perfect example of how enormous change is achievable from a small population. It is our hope that this particular Island SOS instalment drives home the point that these types of large-scale initiatives can be carried out here in Bermuda. With a comparable population size, it is evident that environmental care has become a part of the everyday lifestyle for their community and in Bermuda this can be the same.” said Karla Lacey, BUEI CEO.

“Each BUEI Talk: ‘Island SOS’ presentation focuses on a different island and topic, covering subject matters ranging from beach management master planning, and zero waste event.”
