BUEI Talks To Hold ‘Island SOS’ On July 23
The sixth instalment of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s [BUEI] eight-part Island SOS [Sustainable Ocean Strategies] series is scheduled to take place at BUEI on Saturday, July 23rd at 4.00pm.
A spokesperson said, “This month’s island nation being highlighted is Trinidad and Tobago, with a presentation by Lanya Fanovitch, Senior Ecologist of the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville [ERIC], of Tobago. ERIC is an organisation that works towards sustainability for the people and ecosystems of Northeast Tobago.
“In her presentation, Lanya will share how the ERIC team works closely with their community and commercial partners to ensure conservation efforts are at the forefront of their respective practices. ERIC’s mission, “to value and integrate diverse knowledge and experience to manifest a mutually beneficial relationship between the coastal communities and ecosystems of Northeast Tobago”, speaks directly to the aims and objectives of this initiative.
“Through this symbiotic relationship with local community partners, ERIC is able to showcase the varied natural habitats of northeast Tobago and highlight the importance of the natural world through their offered programmes.
“ERIC provides certified dive training with environmentally conscious divers, snorkel trails of Tobago’s endangered corals as well as ecological expeditions and sea turtle conservation efforts with northeast Sea Turtles [NEST]. ERIC also works closely with Charlotteville Children’s Organic Garden and provides unique flora and fauna tours of northeast Tobago.
“Tobago, which has a much greater land mass than Bermuda, with tropical rainforests and mountain ranges, holds a population of about 1.4 million. The region, a tropical climate unlike Bermuda’s sub-tropical yearly temperatures, boasts its varying diversity of wildlife, which, similarly to Bermuda, is in need of protection.”

“BUEI Talks take place in front of a live audience in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium, with overseas guests presenting online in real time.
