The Ministry of Economy and Labour is marking International Workers’ Day with the release of Bermuda’s first State of Labour in Bermuda 2026 Flagship Report.
A spokesperson said, “Observed annually on 1 May, International Workers’ Day is recognised in more than 80 countries and honours the contributions of workers while highlighting the global pursuit of fair wages, safe working conditions and social justice.
“The State of Labour in Bermuda 2026 Flagship Report provides a comprehensive overview of Bermuda’s labour landscape and highlights measurable progress in strengthening worker protections and aligning domestic legislation with international labour standards.
“Key highlights from the report include:
- Full implementation of a statutory minimum wage – introduced in 2023 and increased to $17.13 per hour in 2025, benefiting workers across multiple sectors.
- Enhanced labour protections – including an increase in maximum severance entitlement for long-serving employees from 26 to 32 weeks’ wages, along with new statutory rights such as mandatory meal breaks, expanded parental leave, and workplace policies addressing bullying and sexual harassment.
- Strengthened workforce development initiatives – including the introduction of apprenticeship and graduate training programmes aligned with international best practices.
“These initiatives mark significant progress in promoting decent work, strengthening social protection, and ensuring Bermuda’s labour framework meets global standards.
“This Report reaffirms the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a modern, fair, and resilient labour market that supports both workers and employers. It also underscores the importance of social dialogue, highlighting continued engagement with employers’ organisations and trade unions through structured tripartite consultation.”
