Photos, Video & 360: Clyde Best Art Mural
An intricate and extensive mural depicting Clyde Best’s football journey is being created next to Somerset Cricket Club.
The painting on the wall along Clyde Best Lane — which was officially named after the legendary footballer back in 2014 — includes a portrait of the Bermudian icon in his West Ham United kit and various action images of him during his heyday in England as a trailblazer for Black players.
There is also a section celebrating his cricketing exploits in Cup Match, having made his debut for Somerset as a 15-year-old in 1966.
Barbara Dillas, the project organiser, told Bernews that the mural follows Mr Best from his days as a youngster dreaming big to his breakout as one of the first Black players in English football.
The mural, which is being created by a team of 20 artists, also includes colourful silhouettes of Somerset athletes who have represented Bermuda at the Olympic Games and “many illustrations of Somerset as a community”.
Ms Dillas, a former art teacher at Sandys Middle School, said: “We have many illustrations to tell Somerset’s [story]. We also have a piece from Sandys Middle School who have contributed. We did pull schools into the project as well.”
Mr Best, who also played for Feyenoord in Holland and Portland Timbers in the United States, made 186 appearances for West Ham from 1968 to 1976, scoring 58 goals.
The mural is not quite finished yet, however a look at the progress so far is below.
