Umpire French To Be Inducted Into Hall Of Fame
[Written by Stephen Wright]
A top tennis umpire with links to Bermuda will be inducted into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Sande French has worked as a chair umpire for 36 years, including in prestigious competitions such as Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open.
She also umpired at the XL Bermuda Open, which is now defunct, from 1995 to 2008.
French is the first and only African-American women’s chair umpire in the United States Tennis Association. She also helped train umpires in Bermuda.
The Black Tennis Hall of Fame honours the achievements of those individuals who achieved success despite the barriers they faced.
The 14th annual induction ceremony, a virtual event, will take place at the HBCU Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia.
