Butterfield Bermuda Championship Day Three
The 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship will conclude tomorrow [Oct 30] with the Final Round Fueled by Rubis. Tee times will start at 7:40 a.m. with all golfers teeing off from Hole #1 in twosomes. The leaders tee off at 1:20 p.m. and play is estimated to end at approximately 5:30 p.m. with the closing ceremony then taking place on the 18th green.
The players are vying for a $6.5 million purse. The champion will receive $1.17 million and 500 FedExCup points. The winner is also awarded a two-year PGA TOUR exemption, 20 Official World Golf Ranking points, and berths in multiple tournaments including the 2023 Masters, 2023 PGA Championship, 2023 THE PLAYERS Championship and next year’s Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Leader in the Clubhouse
Seamus Power and Ben Griffin (-18, 195) are tied for the lead heading into the final round, both setting a new tournament record for low 54-hole scoring. The previous low 54-hole score was -17, 196, set by Harry Higgs in 2019 and matched by Taylor Pendrith last year.
With rounds of 65-65-65, Power posted eight birdies and a double bogey today as he looks for his second career PGA TOUR win. He was victorious at the 2021 Barbasol Championship. Griffin, with rounds of 65-64-66, posted four birdies and one bogey as he pursues his first PGA TOUR win.
Kevin Yu and Aaron Baddeley are tied for third place (-16, 197), two strokes back of the leaders.
Former Champ in Contention
2020 Butterfield Bermuda Championship winner Brian Gay shot a 66 for the third straight round to sit in 5th place, three shots back at -15, 194. His final score two years ago was -15 overall when he won. Playing here every year, he has now scored under-par in 14 of his 15 rounds with a lone 75 in the first round of 2021.
A Tale of Two Nines
Brent Grant, -11, 202, shot 69 today. He ran off six straight birdies from #2-7 before a bogey on #9 to make the turn at -14. But the back nine saw him card two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey on #17 to finish the round xx strokes off the lead.
Local
Michael Sims (+1, 73-70=143) was the low Bermudian in the field this week by two strokes over Jarryd Dillas (+3, 69-76=145). Dillas, who finished his last hole Saturday morning, posted the lowest score ever by a Bermudian competing in the tournament historically with an opening round 69. Fellow Bermudians Nick Jones (+5, 71-76=147) and Kim Swan (+28, 89-81=170) also competed.
Second Round Suspension
The second round was suspended due to darkness at 7:01 p.m. with two players, Tano Goya and Jarryd Dillas, yet to complete the round. It resumed at 9:12 a.m. and was completed at 9:17 a.m. Goya sunk his par putt to make the cut at -6 and play the weekend.
