Michael Burgess Wins At World Cup Open
The 2023 World Cup Open martial arts competition was held on Sunday [Jan 15], with Bermuda’s Michael Burgess of Kobayashi Okinawan School of Karate-Do competing in the 12 to 14 age group, earning a first place finish and two third place finishes.
A spokesperson said, “John Chung held his 2023 World Cup Open martial arts competition on Sunday, January 15 at the Hilton Washington Dulles Hotel. We had one representative from Bermuda competing with fellow martial artists from all over the US, Australia and Canada.
“Michael Burgess of Kobayashi Okinawan School of Karate-Do competed in the 12 to 14 age group. He won first place in traditional weapons, third place in traditional kata, and third place in sparring. In the kata division, there were 11 strong competitors. The sparring division was hotly contested with Michael winning his first two rounds before losing by a narrow margin to the overall winner.”
