Pickleball Courts To Open At Tennis Stadium
The Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, in collaboration with the Pickleball Association of Bermuda, announced the official opening of brand new pickleball courts at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium.
A Government spokesperson said, “Pickleball has been rapidly gaining popularity in Bermuda over the past few years, and the new courts are a testament to the growing demand for this exciting sport.
“To celebrate the opening of the new pickleball courts, a grand opening Pickleball Extravaganza is currently taking place tomorrow, Saturday, June 3rd, 2023. The Extravaganza is open to the public and will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, a demonstration of pickleball techniques by elite players, open play events for current Pickleballers, and opportunities for attendees to try their hand at the sport. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on Saturday.
“The event will be feature students from several of the island’s public and private schools, some of whom have adopted pickleball sessions into their curriculums.
“The new courts are designed to provide a state-of-the-art facility for players of all skill levels and ages to enjoy. The new courts at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium will make it easy for everyone to access and enjoy the game. The new facility features four regular-sized courts, with ample space between courts to ensure player safety and comfort.
“The new courts are made of high-quality materials to provide optimal playing conditions and to withstand the Bermuda climate.”
“We are thrilled to offer this new facility to our community and visitors,” said the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport Owen Darrell. “Pickleball is a fun and accessible sport that can be enjoyed by all ages, and we look forward to seeing the courts used by players of all levels. We invite everyone to come out and celebrate the grand opening with us.”
Jekon Edness, Senior Sports Development Officer adds, “The new pickleball courts in Bermuda are a valuable addition to the island’s sports facilities and will undoubtedly attract both locals and tourists alike. The sport’s growth in popularity is sure to continue, and these new courts will help ensure that pickleball remains a beloved pas=me for years to come.”
“The Pickleball Association of Bermuda, which has been wildly active as a response to the rapid uptake of the sport here, are striving to make participation in pickleball a shining example of the positive impact sports can have on individuals and communities,” says Matt Dragonetti, President. “We appreciate the government’s investment in these new public courts and anticipate that they will be used extensively.”
