Treanor Wins Medals At Fencing Championships
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Donald Treanor claimed gold and bronze medals at the recent Pan American Youth and Veterans Fencing Championships in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Treanor, competing in the 60-plus category, won gold in the foil and bronze in the sabre event.
In the foil direct elimination round, Treanor defeated Aldo Precciozzi, of the United States, 10-2, Carlos Lopez Castano, of Colombia, 10-7, Guillermo Blanco, of Argentina, 10-3, and Alan Buchwald, of the US, 10-4 in the final.
“It’s the best result I’ve had at a tournament for a long time,” Treanor told Bernews. “I often show flashes of brilliance but end up self-sabotaging! After the pool games, I was like, ‘It’s time to quit playing around and go after it’. It was a wonderful result.”
Treanor has now switched his focus to preparing for the Veteran Fencing World Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida, in October, where he will compete in all three weapons – foil, epee and sabre.
“I’ve proven to myself I can do it based on this performance,” he added. “I know the concentration it takes and know I can do it. That’s helpful for me.”
Thanks to the two medals won by the 65-year-old, Bermuda finished eighth in the medal table at the championships.
Thank goodness you kept your cool this time Donald your flashes became burst of your brilliance calm and cool to attain a gold and bronze medal. Excellent and congratulations
Well done!
