Skyport Introduces Wildlife Control Measure
Skyport has introduced an “advanced wildlife control measure” at the airport which “aims to mitigate bird-related safety hazards during critical flight operations such as landing and take-off.”
A spokesperson said, “Skyport Facilities and Asset Management is delighted to announce the introduction of an advanced wildlife control measure designed to enhance the Wildlife Management Program at the L.F. Wade International Airport. This pioneering initiative aims to mitigate bird-related safety hazards during critical flight operations such as landing and take-off.
“On Wednesday, July 26, the new mobile ‘Wailer’ distress call system was installed in the northeast airfield section of runway 30 end.
“The Wailer system, powered entirely by solar energy, is equipped with four speakers that emit high-fidelity natural sounds, including distress calls and cries of predators.
“This innovative approach serves as a deterrent, creating an environment perceived as uncomfortable and threatening by most bird species. The system is pre-programmed and site-specific, tailored to the indigenous species causing disruptions at the airport.
“The operation of this mobile unit includes a sound emission cycle of two minutes between calls, effectively covering a distance of approximately 1,000 feet. In line with our commitment to environmentally conscious operations, the unit automatically shuts off at dusk.
“The launch phase of this new equipment will be under the diligent watch of the Wildlife Control Team, who will conduct ongoing field monitoring to ensure maximum efficiency and safety.”
“General public seeking more information on this initiative may contact the Skyport Facilities Management Help Desk at 444-4380.”
Joseph Butterfield, Facilities Manager at Skyport, said of the new technology, “At Skyport, we are constantly striving to leverage the latest advancements in technology to enhance our operational efficiency and safeguard our services. We believe that the introduction of this measure is a significant step towards achieving these objectives which protects both air travellers and our local wildlife.”
