Governor Confirms A ‘Major Cyber-Attack’

September 22, 2023 | 11 Comments

[Updated] “Bermuda’s Government IT systems were subjected to a major cyber-attack” and the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre and the National Crime Agency “have been in contact with the Bermuda authorities, and are providing advice to support them,” Governor Rena Lalgie said.

The Governor said, “Yesterday Bermuda’s Government IT systems were subjected to a major cyber-attack. That incident is ongoing. Whilst there was an early indication of the geographical source of that attack, any further speculation on the possible source or motivation for the attack would be unhelpful.

“I can confirm that the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre and the National Crime Agency are aware of the incident, have been in contact with the Bermuda authorities, and are providing advice to support them. The Bermuda authorities are also receiving support from a range of commercial partners.

“Government will advise on the ongoing impacts to services of this attack on a regular basis. I am working with the Acting Premier, Cabinet, and the Bermuda Police Service to support the immediate response.”

Update: Deputy Premier Walter Roban spoke on this matter in Parliament today

Well, this is going to cause trouble.

Her Excellency has specifically declined to name Russia after the Premier already has and she refers to “the Acting Premier”.

The Governor said Unhelpful….she was telling David to stop running his chops

  3. Hey says:

Britain stepping in to help Bermuda again and again. Independence is really just a propaganda play, those who spout it want to put us all at risk. Thank you Britain. Bailed us out during COVID too.

  4. Lion Paw says:

Pirates on security and passwords a must in todays world of hacking

  5. Steve says:

Blurt makes some silly comment then goes AWOL on business trip so he says. Basically avoiding the flack from us Bermudians once again. Time for a election

  6. Will says:

    Yes! Time for an election.

But Burt wouldn’t dare, he might lose this, I think everyone has had enough of him.

  7. Vortex says:

Was it a bunch of nine year olds?

The Government IT systems are known to be approaching a comedy act. In covid they couldn’t even get a workable wfh set up going.

Government IT systems have been held together with spit and duct tape for many years. This is not the first time the Department of Information and Digital Technology (IDT) systems have been hacked. Say, IDT is in Burt’s portfolio… just like Gaming.

  8. Hilarious! says:

    My comment from Burt’s announcement:

A few years ago, the government was provided with a straightforward and quickly implementable plan to significantly reduce such threats to Bermuda and did nothing.

Who is in charge of The Department of Information and Digital Technology? Oh, right, that falls under Burt’s portfolio along with Gaming.

Who is in charge of National Security? Oh, heck, that would be Minister Caines.

Now I see why nothing was done.

  9. Really? says:

Why would he ever make a statement like that! Russia really!

I listened to his CV press conference. Smug, arrogant, not building a new house in Tuckers town, lol no it’s not being constructed, and then Russia, he wants to irritate Russia, puts the UK in a pickle and oh yeah I’m off on another trip, Government business definitely. I actually thought he was calling an election at one point.

Btw, I thought back at the leadership conference many many months ago he announced the deal was done. Well now it is nearing completion and it’s complicated. SMH!!

  10. SMH says:

Oh Yes Russia wants to gain access to Bermuda’s nuclear missiles.
