Govt IT Issues ‘From An External Source’

September 21, 2023 | 12 Comments

[Updated with video] The Government is “currently experiencing internet/email and phone service interruptions.”

“All Departments are impacted,” a spokesperson said. ”The Department of Information and Digital Technology [IDT] is working quickly to restore service and apologizes for any disruption and inconvenience caused.”

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon [Sept 21] Premier David Burt said, “The Government is experiencing some challenges with our IT systems, there has been an incident which is affecting not only the Bermuda Government but some other regional governments as well.

“Our initial indication is it has come from an external source, most likely from Russia, and we are working with agencies to make sure that we can identify any particular challenges and make sure that services are restored as quickly as possible.”

Update 12.23am: The Government said, “As a result of the network interruption it is anticipated that there will be further service disruption today, Friday September 22.

“Investigation into the incident continues and steps to restore service are ongoing. Further information can be found in graphic attached.”

Update 1.45pm: Governor Rena Lalgie said, “Yesterday Bermuda’s Government IT systems were subjected to a major cyber-attack. That incident is ongoing. Whilst there was an early indication of the geographical source of that attack, any further speculation on the possible source or motivation for the attack would be unhelpful.

“I can confirm that the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre and the National Crime Agency are aware of the incident, have been in contact with the Bermuda authorities, and are providing advice to support them. The Bermuda authorities are also receiving support from a range of commercial partners.

“Government will advise on the ongoing impacts to services of this attack on a regular basis. I am working with the Acting Premier, Cabinet, and the Bermuda Police Service to support the immediate response.”

Yup if all else fails blame it on Russia. SMH!

    • Hilarious! says:

You mean Russia and Trump ;-)

    • Caren says:

      Breaking News

The Russians infiltrated the Bermuda government system ????

      Anymore skeletons in the closet?

    • Hmmm says:

I don’t see any evidence of a current cyber attack in the Caribbean, let alone by Russia.

Am guessing either there will be a parade of what we did to upgrade and prevent a serious impact or an RFP put out there to spend to F&F for a cyber protection overhaul.

      • Joe Bloggs says:

Why are you looking at the Caribbean? Our Premier said “some other regional governments”. The nears “regional governments” to us would be the Governments of North Carolina or South Carolina.

    Pathetic excuse. SMH

  3. Hilarious! says:

A few years ago, the government was provided with a straightforward and quickly implementable plan to significantly reduce such threats to Bermuda and did nothing.

Who is in charge of The Department of Information and Digital Technology? Oh, right, that falls under Burt’s portfolio along with Gaming.

Who is in charge of National Security? Oh, heck, that would be Minister Caines.

Now I see why nothing was done.

“Our initial indication is it has come from an external source, most likely from Russia …”

Pure speculation, but it is gratifying to think we are more important to Russia right now than Ukraine is!

And I do like the fact that “Government House has been apprised”. Government House is empty because you refused to maintain it Mr. Premier and Finance Minister!

  5. Steve says:

More b/s from Blurt. Oh by the way Bermudian taxpayers paying for stupid overseas trips by Burtmit and his green misfits. Stay home use zoom to be at conference. Simple logic.

  6. kevin says:

Wow the man actually said that without smiling he is truly a magnificent politician no good at anything else. Can you imagine Russia hacking into Bermuda Government Systems , they would immediately cease when they discoverd there arent any records up to date in fact some havent for 4 years also seeing what we owe to the world they would have shut it down for fear of being asked for money

  7. Massive Mega Yacht says:

See what happens it’s payback for marine and avaiation registration withdrawals and the billions that we are holding back from Putin and his oligarchs. Lord only knows what they may gain from cyber attacking a world super power like us.

  8. Question says:

Naming the suspected perpetrator is about the most stupid thing Burt has ever done, and it’s a long list.
