Mia Fishel Involved In W Gold Cup For US
Mia Fishel will hope to be involved the United States women’s national team’s opening group A match of the Concacaf W Gold Cup against the Dominican Republic in Carson, California, on Tuesday [February 20].
The Dominican Republic reached the qualifying play-offs after defeating Bermuda 2-0 at home in December to finish top of group C League B. They beat Guyana 1-0 in the play-offs in Los Angeles yesterday.
Fishel, whose father is Bermudian, was named in a youthful 23-player squad by US interim manager Twila Kilgore, who will remain in charge while incoming coach Emma Hayes finishes the Women’s Super League season with Chelsea.
Kilgore said the Gold Cup will give younger players a chance to experience a tournament similar to the Olympic format in preparation for the Paris Games this summer.
Fishel, who plays as a striker, joined Chelsea from Mexican club Tigres for a reported $250,000 last summer.
The US will also play group games against Argentina on February 23 and Mexico on February 26. The tournament ends on March 10.
