“Getting To The Root Of The Problem” Discussion
A panel discussion — entitles “Getting to the Root of the Problem” – will take place on Thursday evening [June 18], with the event aiming to “explore how slavery, colonisation, religion and diaspora have shaped homophobic and transphobic attitudes in Bermuda.”
A spokesperson said, “OUTBermuda’s upcoming Bermuda Pride Panel Discussion has an ambitious goal: to discuss the root causes of homophobia.
“Getting to the ‘Root’ of the Problem is a Panel Discussion taking place on Thursday, June 18 from 6:00 to 9:30 pm at the Bermuda Sailor’s Home. Organised and moderated by Yassine Chentouf, the event aims to explore how slavery, colonisation, religion and diaspora have shaped homophobic and transphobic attitudes in Bermuda.
“Four people with diverse backgrounds have been asked to speak on the panel; Linda Bogle Mienzer, Revd Dr Canon Augustine Tanner-Ihm, Kristin White, and US-based professor, Myron Beasley, Ph.D. Myron Beasley Ph.D. is a professor of American Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies at Bates College. Much of his research focuses on the intersection of gender/sexuality, art and social change. His work emphasizes internalized colonial sexualities and gendered performances within the African Diaspora.
“Linda Bogle-Mienzer is a Bermudian activist, Labour Relations Organizer, and LGBTQI+ Representative for the Caribbean Region with Public Services International who uses her lived experience as a gay Black woman to champion human rights, intersectionality, and social justice.
“Discussing both historical and current religious influences, Rev Dr Augustine, Minister of Wesley Community Church, will share insights from his experience as a psychologist and a theologian with extensive research on post-colonial thought.
“Historian, Kristin White, is a community organiser, entrepreneur and writer. She is involved in several community and advocacy projects, including as a founding member of Social Justice Bermuda. As a local historian, she will provide context on slavery in Bermuda.
“Organisers of the event invite any community members who are open to learning and unlearning to join this event. At 6:00 there will be a short welcoming reception. There will be a short Q&A period at the end of the event.
“The event is free to attend, but a ticket is required. Tickets can be reserved at www.ptix.bm.
“OUTBermuda, Bermuda’s only charity dedicated to LGBTQ+ people, is the driving force behind Bermuda Pride. The panel discussion marks the second event in the Bermuda Pride 2026 line-up. The full event line-up can be seen at www.pride.bm.”
