‘Walk/Drive Family Adventure’ Set For Feb 11
A Walk/Drive Family Adventure will be held on Sunday [Feb 11] starting at Christ Church Devonshire to celebrate the anniversaries of Elliot School and the Progressive Group.
A spokesperson said, “A Walk/Drive Family Adventure will take place on Sunday, February 11th, from 3.00pm, beginning at Christ Church Devonshire [rain date on Sunday, February 18]. It will be highlighting aspects of our shared legacy; efforts – which proved to be dominoes – to open our society to the benefit of all.
“At a media conference to publicize the event, representatives of those involved gathered at the original Elliot School on Jubilee Road in light of the 175th anniversary of the school and the relevance Elliot had to the Progressive Group, which marks their 65th anniversary.
“Those involved at the conference included Glenn Fubler – event coordinator – and Sir John Swan, who actually attended school in the building 70 years ago, when it housed the Howard Academy. Also included were Kentoine Jennings, whose ancestors were amongst the 12 founding Elliot; Eduoard Williams, a member of the Progressive Group; and Emma Williams, daughter of the late Ottiwell Simmons, who also attended Howard Academy along with Roosevelt Brown at the time.
“Additionally, there was Roberta Tucker, president of the Elliot Alumni, William Usher, president of Wolves Football Club, and Danielle Frith, who was representing Kaleidoscope.
“The Walk/Drive Family Adventure will be a three stage affair. Attendees will gather at Christ Church Devonshire and walk over to the original Elliot, pausing at Kaleidoscope upon their return and back to their vehicles.
“Stage two involves driving to the current Elliot campus on Hermitage Road to reflect on the significance of 2024, as well as to hear about Devonshire College and its links to Berkeley Institute and Saltus.
“Stage three involves driving to park at Whitney School and walk down to Flatts Field, adjacent to the home in which most of the PG secret meetings took place in the home of Elliot teacher, the late Roslyn and her husband Eduoard Williams.
“Promoting accessibility for all, a mini-bus service will provide assistance to those needing it, through the collaborative spirit of BAMZ.”
Sir John Swan said, “As a youngster who benefited from that opportunity to learn, I encourage the community to come out in appreciation of those many on whose shoulders we all stand, but also note that in always learning this family adventure is promoting a coming together, which of course makes for a better Bermuda for today.”
Mr Fubler said, “Thanks to all who are part of this collaboration; those represented and the others, neighbouring churches, schools, and businesses who are playing a part.”
