Athletes from the Bermuda Sanshou Association will return to the island with 13 medals from the recent Phoenix Wushu Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona.

Kaelin Cox claimed two gold and three silver medals in taolu [a set of stylised movements].

Meanwhile, there were gold medal wins in sanda [Chinese kickboxing] for Krista Dyer, Kallan Todd, Quennel Robinson, Enzi Johnston, Geraldine Sidders, Tristan Robinson, Jonathan Trott, and Muryah Swan.

Dyer, Todd, and Quennel Robinson won their respective weight divisions; Johnston, Sidders, Trott, Swan, and Tristan Robinson were uncontested in their weight categories.

Accompanying the team to Phoenix were coaches Garon Wilkinson, Cyril Whitter III, and Che Bean, and judges Dwayne Cox and Nolette Webb.

“Some of the sanda guys were uncontested in their actual weight divisions, but we made sure everyone had at least one fight,” Wilkinson told Bernews.

Wilkinson was fulsome in his praise for multiple medal-winner Cox and the sanda fighters, who gained valuable experience.

“It was great to see so many of our guys execute so well,” he said. “We had some outstanding performances.

“The objective was met, and that objective wasn’t to come out here and win medals but face quality opposition.”
