Marshall And Lindsay Win May 24th Race
Lamont Marshall and Gayle Lindsey have won the 2024 Bermuda Day Half-Marathon Derby titles, racing to victory this morning in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.
Lamont Marshall completed the new 13.1-mile course, starting on the junction of Cambridge Road and Somerset Road and finishing at the former finish line on Court Street, in 1hr 14min 27sec.
Ryan Outerbridge, 21, demonstrated his huge potential with an eye-catching performance, pushing Marshall all the way until the business end of the race, finishing in 1:14:44.
Meanwhile, Trott, a four-time runner-up, rounded out the podium, completing the challenging course in 1:17:32.
“It’s my toughest victory, but it was my best,” Marshall told Bernews. “When you have someone who turns 40 in July against someone fresh [Outerbridge], who graduated just a few weeks ago … congratulations to Ryan, his mother, father, and coaching team.”
“Not to dwell on last year, but it’s the elephant in the room,” Marshall said.
“This is what Bermuda deserves – three young Bermudians fighting right to the end.”
As for the change of course, Marshall added: “For the finish, with a big screen, it’s nice. It’s better than Bernard Park.”
Outerbridge said he was happy to have ensured the race was one of the closest in recent memory.
“Many people were rooted for me today,” he said. “People want to see a new champion – they don’t want to see a one-horse race each year.
“I’m happy with the way the recent went. I gave it a go. Lamont’s got a lot more experience than me and a lot stronger right now.”
Trott said he had no complaints about his performance.
“I gave it my best go,” he said. “I was able to push Lamont and Ryan until about mile nine.”
In the women’s race, Gayle Lindsay also retained her title, posting a time of 1:26:33, placing eleventh overall, with Christine Dailey finishing closely behind in 1:26:56.
“It felt hotter this year, so I took it a bit more conservatively at the beginning,” Lindsay said.
“The last 5k was just pure grit and determination.”
