Pesticides Regulations Consultation Summary

August 27, 2024 | 1 Comment

The Ministry of Health announced today that the summary of comments from the Pesticides Regulations Consultation is now available.

A Government spokesperson said, “This consultation, which ran from June 28 to August 4, 2024, was part of a public engagement initiative on pesticide regulations launched at the end of June. This initiative was originally introduced in the Speech from the Throne in November 2022.

“Although pesticides are beneficial in many ways, their misuse can negatively impact the environment and public health. Bermuda’s environment is particularly vulnerable to damage from pesticides. Bermuda is one of the most densely populated countries with rainwater harvesting for drinking water. Pesticide Regulations tailored to the specific risks posed are a sensible approach.

“The proposed Pesticides Regulations will bring into force the Pesticides Safety Act 2009 and intend to increase the safety of pesticides use in Bermuda from a human health and environmental perspective.”

Minister of Health Kim Wilson stated, “The feedback from this public consultation is essential in guiding our priorities and shaping the final regulations. We greatly appreciate everyone who participated by completing the questionnaire and sharing their thoughts. The results have directed our focus towards licensing commercial pesticide applicators, as well as training and importation.

“The insights and perspectives we’ve received are invaluable in helping us develop Pesticides Regulations that protect our environment and the health of our community, while also ensuring these crucial tools remain accessible to those who rely on them.”

“The overview of comments on Bermuda Citizens Forum and responses to prioritization questionnaire is here: Health Public Consultations | Government of Bermuda [www.gov.bm]. The consultation process is ongoing, and this marks the completion of phases 1 and 2. In phase 3, stakeholders will be invited to participate in focus groups scheduled for September.”
