Video: International Youth Day Proclamation
The Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors Tinee Furbert, marked International Youth Day 2024 with a proclamation at City Hall today.
Minister Furbert said, “Thank you for joining us today to celebrate International Youth Day 2024. “Your greatest contribution to the universe may not be something you do, but someone you raise.”
“I want to extend a special welcome to Acting Mayor John Harvey, McKenzie Kohl Tuckett and our Town Crier who are with us on this important day. It is always a pleasure to stand alongside such individuals committed to supporting our youth and their future. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” speaks directly to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead of us.
“In today’s world, technology is not just a tool; it’s a lifeline. It’s how we connect, how we learn, and how we grow. Our young people are leading the way in this digital age, not just as consumers but as vibrant creators, innovators, and problem solvers.
“As a mother of two young persons, they constantly remind me of this digital age, school online during the pandemic, being able to quickly see and speak to them through platforms such as what’s app, tic toc, Instagram, snap chat. They also remind me of experiences they have not experienced before and how they continue to need guidance.
“We must ensure that our youth are given every opportunity to thrive in this space with support and guidance. It’s not just about access to technology; it’s about education, mentorship, safety and the encouragement to explore new ideas. It’s about creating an environment where young minds can dream big and have the support to turn those dreams into reality.
“I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the incredible impact that young Bermudians are already making in the digital world. They are developing apps, creating online communities, and using data to tackle some of our most pressing challenges. These are not just small wins—they are the building blocks of a better, more sustainable Bermuda.
“Today, as we read the Proclamation and celebrate International Youth Day, let’s make a commitment—not just in words but in action—to continue empower and collaborate with our youth.
“Thank you to everyone here today, a special thank you to the Office of Youth Affairs for your support and dedication to our youth. Together, we can transform clicks into progress and help our young people pave the way for a more sustainable and inclusive world. Thank you.”
