Girls Event To Help Inspire Future Leaders
The Bermudian Queens Rock Academy will host an event aimed at fostering self-awareness and building self-esteem among young girls from October 21 to 25 at the Women’s Resource Centre.
With the theme, “A Journey of Resilience, Creativity, and Culture,” the [Her] Story Girls Club event is for girls aged 11 to 15 and hopes to inspire future leaders to break generational cycles and effect meaningful change.
The academy’s founder, Dommonique DeSilva, created the initiative while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Community and Human Services at Empire State University in New York.
“The academy emerged from a deep exploration of identity and community, inspired by my coursework on diversity and the social determinants that challenge our survival,” Ms DeSilva told Bernews.
“This introspection led me to seek ways to express my authentic self and drive meaningful change in my community.”
Ms DeSilva praised the presenters who will generously volunteer their time and expertise.
“We are incredibly grateful for the presenters who selflessly volunteer their time and expertise to nurture the next generation,” she said.
“Teens often learn by observing others, and we want them to see that anything is possible with the right tools and community support.”
Drawing on her experiences as a Para Educator with Bermuda’s Ministry of Education and as a volunteer with the Mirrors Programme, Ms DeSilva highlighted the significant need for initiatives like this on the island.
“Drawing from my own journey, particularly the challenges I faced as a ward of the state at 14, our academy aims to empower youth navigating similar struggles,” she said.
“I often reflect on how my life might have changed with the right coping skills and a supportive community during my toughest times.
“Adolescence is a challenging period as young people shed old identities and search for their place in the world.
“Raised by my father as a single parent of three, I embody resilience and determination, believing in the importance of loving your neighbour as yourself. I strive to cultivate the same seeds of support and growth for our youth.”
Ms DeSilva also shared how her personal journey has inspired her efforts.
“I’ve learned that every setback can lead to a comeback,” she added.
“The adversities I faced do not define who I am or my future. Despite being told I would never graduate from college; I now hold two degrees.
“I was often told I wouldn’t be a great mother due to my lack of a traditional role model, yet I am committed to defying those odds and planting seeds of hope for others, as I remember the weight of struggle all too well.
“Our academy is dedicated to providing a safe space for young individuals to learn, grow, and thrive.”
