Update 5.12pm: A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] and the Bermuda Bankers Association [BBA] today announce the formation of a partnership to combat the growing incidence of financial crimes in Bermuda.

“Together, the BPS and BBA will deliver timely and relevant information to Bermuda residents and businesses, building awareness about financial crimes and scams, and offering advice on how to protect against these threats. Bermuda is experiencing growth in the number and severity of cyber and other financial crime attempts, some of which have resulted in financial losses and personal distress.

“Senior citizens and other vulnerable segments of the population are no longer the only targets -fraudsters are using more sophisticated tools including artificial intelligence to attack anyone with access to a mobile phone or computer.

“Over the coming weeks and months the BPS and BBA will be providing information about current frauds and scams, resources and tools that are available to Bermuda’s residents and businesses, as well as helpful advice on topics such as cyber security and identity security.

“Information will be made available online across websites and social media platforms, through traditional media channels and using video and print formats. Already, information is available on the BBA website and on the websites and social media channels of Bermuda’s four licensed banks.”

Geoff Scott, CEO of the BBA, said, “What we are seeing in Bermuda is part of a global surge in financial crime. But it may not feel that way, because scammers are pretending to work for your local bank, utility provider or government office. Their methods and scams are constantly changing and getting more sophisticated.

“We know that it’s better to be prepared than to get ready, and we thank the Bermuda Police Service for their willing partnership with us to help build awareness amongst Bermuda’s residents and businesses. We will add more partners to this team in 2025.”
