Pete Carroll has been hired as the replacement for Antonio Pierce as head coach of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders franchise.

Carroll, who guided the Seattle Seahawks to victory at Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 but ‘agreed’ to end his tenure as head coach and move to an advisor role, was last week named to the position vacated by Pierce.

It was well known that the 73-year-old still desired to coach, and Pierce’s termination following a 4-13 season, combined with Raiders’ owner Mark Davis’ failure to secure first-choice coaching candidate Ben Johnson from the Detroit Lions, opened the door for Carroll.

It is unknown what current job options Pierce has in football, having previously operated as an assistant coach at both major college and professional levels, having been the linebackers coach at Las Vegas before being named interim head coach and, ultimately, head coach.

College does not appear to be an option, and Pierce would face a one-year suspension if hired by any member NCAA institution.

Pierce, the son of Bermudian Cleo Burrows, previously drew interest from the Tenessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons when the two franchises had head coaching vacancies.

Returning to an assistant’s role at the pro level seems likely, however, Pierce can take his time choosing his next course of employment as he continues to collect payment under the terms of his last contract with the Raiders.

Pierce has said little about his firing, but did recently post a video on Instagram of him Pierce posted a video on Instagram of him hugging Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels at Allegiant Stadium. The video was overlaid with the lyrics “I am reincarnated, I was stargazin’, Life goes on …” from rapper Kendrick Lamar, who is, like Pierce a native of Compton, California.
