CedarBridge Academy recently partnered with Titan Tours and the Bermuda National Trust, in a collaborative initiative with CURB, and sponsorship provided by Clarien Bank to facilitate the African Diaspora Heritage trail tour during Black History month, and visited various historical sites of enslavement, sharing insightful stories of resistance and resilience during the pre and post Emancipation era in Bermuda.

A spokesperson said, “The historical sites of enslavement visited included the Bermuda National Trust’s Verdmont House, an historic house, cottage and landscape, Sally Bassett, Barr’s Bay Park, Gibbets Islands, Mary Prince, Jeffrey’s Cave, and at City Hall, sharing the story of When Voices Rise sculpture about Segregation and Theatre Boycotts, and also resilient stories of Black Excellence based on the Black History Portraits in the City Hall foyer.”

CedarBridge Teacher Gina Davis said, “I think it is important for young people today to learn about the history of Bermuda. Even though I am a teacher, I never learned about my country, and the history of my people in Bermuda, and I only learned about the white history and British history of Bermuda. Learning about your own history gives you a sense of pride and a sense of belonging.

“It is so important to know how far we’ve come and understand that we have a long way to go. Learning about the African Diaspora Heritage Trail tours with Titan Tours is amazing, and it makes me want to continue learning more. My hope and expectation are that the young people learn something of value and every school decides to book a tour to learn about this history.”

A spokesperson added, “BNT’s Head of Cultural Heritage Dr. Charlotte Andrews said that its important to share critical aspects of the tangible and intangible heritage of these sites of enslavement and Black resilience and its evolving museum experience that is focused on visitor inclusivity and engagement.

“Students responded that the tour was an awesome and the critical thinking and analysis provided on the subject matter made us want to learn and engage on the subject, because history can be boring, but this experience was not boring at all.

African Diaspora tour guide Rashida Godwin said, “The students were very engaged in learning the historical information, and it helped make my job easier, I enjoy sharing these stories, and it is important to help them understand and to be able to connect the present with the past.

“To truly understand what is happening in the present, then you need to learn what happened in the past, and once you gain this awareness, then you are able to forge ahead, and begin to imagine and create a better future, and not just for yourselves, but for future generations.  I am excited about this opportunity and partnerships and looking forward to continuing working with CedarBridge and many thanks to the sponsors as well.”
