FDM Releases Healthcare Reform Plan
The Free Democratic Movement [FDM] has released what they said is a “comprehensive healthcare reform policy aimed at transforming Bermuda’s healthcare system by prioritizing individual freedom, transparency, and innovation.”
A spokesperson said, “This groundbreaking policy addresses key issues, including mental health, substance abuse, healthcare pricing, insurance reform, and expanded access to natural and preventative care.
“Key Highlights of the FDM Healthcare Reform Plan:
1. Decoupling Healthcare from Employment
“In a major shift from traditional models, the FDM policy ensures that healthcare coverage is independent of employment. This change empowers Bermudians to make healthcare decisions based on their needs, not job status, promoting greater health security and personal choice.
2. Transforming Mental Health & Substance Abuse Treatment
“The FDM is committed to treating mental health and substance abuse as medical issues, not criminal offenses. By shifting the focus to rehabilitation over punishment, the policy aims to better integrate individuals into society while reducing the stigma surrounding these conditions.
3. Transparent Healthcare Pricing
“To promote accountability and competition, the FDM will require all healthcare providers to publish service costs by 2026. This transparency will empower patients to make informed choices about their care, creating a more cost-effective and competitive healthcare environment.
4. Innovative Insurance Models
“The FDM supports the introduction of mutual health insurance models, allowing policyholders to benefit from profits through reduced premiums or enhanced benefits. This incentivizes healthier lifestyles and encourages more responsible use of medical services.
5. Expanding Access to Natural & Preventative Care
“Recognizing the long-term benefits of preventative healthcare, the FDM will expand access to naturopathic medicine, clinical nutrition, and herbal treatments. This approach not only lowers healthcare costs but also improves overall well-being by focusing on disease prevention rather than reactionary care.
A Vision for a Healthier Bermuda
“The FDM’s healthcare policy represents a pivotal step toward a healthier, more sustainable Bermuda by addressing root causes of health issues and removing barriers to access.”
“Our goal is to create a healthcare system that is free from government overreach, driven by market innovations, and tailored to the unique needs of all Bermudians,” stated the FDM spokeswoman.
