Aaliyah Nolan admits it was a “hard decision” to retire prematurely from football because of a knee condition but said she is proud of her achievements for club and country.

The Bermuda women’s national team striker revealed she has battled through pain over the past two seasons while playing for AFC Bradford City Women, carefully managing her training load to remain match-fit.

Despite her injury struggles, the 27-year-old maintained an impressive scoring record, netting 23 goals in 34 appearances for Bradford, who play in the North East Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division.

“It’s been a hard decision,” Nolan told Bernews. “It’s not something I wanted to do, but I’ve had to do it for my health in the long run.

“I’ve had a knee issue for two years and had to decide to either stop playing or manage it.

“It still feels unreal knowing I won’t be preparing for next season.

“However, I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved in the game.”

Nolan, who netted ten goals this term, credits Bradford’s coaches and medical team for their support in helping her extend her playing career. She said she made the decision to retire last summer.

“Bradford have been amazing in limiting my training and minutes during games to ensure I could play every game this season,” said Nolan, who started her career at PHC Lady Zebras.

“I spoke to my coach at the start of the season and said, ‘This is where my head is at, but I’ll put in 100 per cent effort no matter what’.
“They’ve worked with me all season – the physio and rehab work.

“It’s been painful at times, but to complete the season was a great achievement for me.”

A former Leeds United player, Nolan is now turning her attention to coaching, setting her sights on the next phase of her football journey.

“I’m looking to get into coaching and player development and intend to take my coaching badges,” said Nolan, who helped Bermuda win a gold medal at the International Island Games on home soil in 2013.

“I’d love to coach at a high level one day. I’m excited to get started. There are many coaching opportunities for women these days.

“Hopefully, my football career in England can inspire young Bermuda women to follow their dreams.”
